Further commute and rural living

Hello! The OH and I currently rent in quite an affluent area. We sold our old home to move here to be closer to work- rent for a while to scope out the area and then buy. Although we can afford a house in the area, we aren’t sure what the hype was about the area. It’s very nice and has good commuter links, but there’s very little countryside and it’s still a good 30 minute drive into the centre. My partner drives 30 minutes to work from here, and I have two jobs, one 40 minutes one way and one 40 minutes the other (hence the middle ground of here).

We miss greenery and we could get a lot more value for money if we moved further away. We are torn between staying here and having somewhat short commuter distances or moving near his family and having quite far commuter distances.

If we move we will be nearer one of my jobs, but the other (I do two days a week) will be over an hour. My partner would also be looking up to, or more than an hours commute.

Has anyone chose the bigger commute but the rural/bigger home? Anybody done it the other way? Stayed in a town, and had a smaller home.

Its also worth noting that the houses we can buy in our current location are quite small and mostly in need of renovating. We are quite young and don’t mind the renovation but also want a home we might want to grow into with a family.

Look for new jobs in the direction of the place you want to live?

I left London and moved back to the countryside closer to family. Commute was 1:15-1:30 each way although I could work from home 2 days a week. Fast forward 4 years and I ended up with burnout. It was just too much. But these days after a break I am working again, only 4 days with a 45 min commute twice a week, work from home 2 days. So it depends how long your commute will be, if you can work flexibly and if you think it's sustainable.
