Anyone regretted their move out of London?

We're in the same situation that many many people find themselves in. We live in North London in a 2 bed flat with 2 kids and can't afford the jump to a 3 bed. We'd love more indoor and outdoor space but we also love our life in London. DS is 7 and goes to a wonderful school, I'm worried about moving and him not being in such a good one. DH works mainly from home but we'd both like to be commutable to London to get into work

Anyone regret moving out or should we just take the plunge??

Yes sold London property (zone 2), rented outside London -I really hated it and moved back (zone 3 to get a bit more space and also get out to family in Surrey easily) - that was 11 years ago. Lots of wonderful schools outside London so don't worry about that. I'm just a city type and really missed London (DH could live anywhere), I'm so happy to live here as now the DDs are teens I have my own time and love everything London has to offer. Dds are independent too.

You need to decide if you love London life more than extra house space or vice versa. For me a bigger house/flat means nothing compared to jumping on the tube and being at South Ken or Cov gdn etc etc or walking down the road to numerous independent coffee shops, resaturants. I love London

Not for one second! 18yrs since moving out of London, never looked back. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks both! Such a hard decision so frustrating we can't afford to stay. And then there's the question of where to move...

Kind of. We moved very far away from London (several hours on the train). The main thing I miss is my friends who mostly still live in London and the “young person atmosphere” you get there where things somehow feel more relaxed and less “middle class” compared to where we are now (sorry if this is offensive - I don’t know how else to describe it). There are days where it does feel very boring and going to the same park several times a week gets tiresome.

However, it’s a lot nicer to be able to afford more with the kids outside of London, have a lot more green space, and to feel things are safer and cleaner here. So on balance I think we did the right thing moving.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I'm just wondering if you made any progress/decisions on this?

@TheBeesKnee Hi! So we haven't moved yet but are in the process of selling. Life is just too hectic with 2 kids in the flat, I'm currently working on my bed as it's the only semi quiet space! We will likely move to Woking and are feeling excited for the change

TheBeesKnee · 15/08/2023 22:53

@movingtotheburbs thanks for replying!

Can I ask what made you decide on Woking?

movingtotheburbs · 16/08/2023 07:50

@TheBeesKnee It's a large town so there's still stuff to do, it's very easy to get into London, we can actually afford a house there which is not the case with a lot of the commuter belt, and we have family there. Where are you thinking of moving to?
