Blackberry picking. When do you go?

When does everyone tend to go blackberry picking (from high places away from dog wee) 🤣

I really want to make the most of it this year as the children love it, loving baking crumble and love eating it.

Last year we missed out by a week or two. Today out on a walk I noticed some blackberries were already fat and juicy but there’s obviously a few weeks to wait.

So when do you go?

(And what else can I forage this autumn / winter?)

I’m going to put some bags and old lunch boxes in the car just in case we see any soon. Keeping my eyes out 👀

Is there anything else worth foraging soon?

Lol, not all that chilly, Woodland - we reached 29C during the recent heatwave!

Pick them when you see them? I always carry a bag just in case. They keep well in the cool and can be joined by more pickings until you have enough.

My mum used to always take us in the last week of the summer holidays

I find that early August to early September is the main time now. I intend to start carrying an empty pot on my walks starting from this week.

Still picking wild raspberries here! (Stirlingshire) brambles will be next then the blaeberries 😍

I started here a fortnight ago. I think I have picked about ten pounds so far, in hedges 200 yards from the house. I have made two litres of blackberry spirits and had loads with custard and with muesli for breakfast.

I picked some this morning from the woods/country park near where I live. I didn't need much for an ice cream recipe I want to try. I noticed quite a few hazelnuts on the trees but the wild roses I pick the townships off had disappeared.

About three pounds picked here, divided into bags and in the freezer ready to add to apples/plums/damsons for crumble.

We have apples and damsons, and will swap with a neighbour who has plums. I make jam, she makes chutney so we always swap a few jars too.

I've already picked some and made a pie. I live rural we have an abundance of them.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/08/2022 16:05

We went on Wednesday evening and yesterday - they've been ripe here for a week (East London). The very first blackberries are always the biggest and best of the year, and by September they won't be worth eating here.

NOW. In 2022 anyway. North Norfolk. The blackberries got ripe weeks ago & are dying off already because of drought.
