Villages commutable to Manchester

hearmywomanlyroar · 03/06/2022 23:29

Currently live in a nice suburb with an easy commute into Manchester but now we only have to go into the office 1 day a week DH and I are keen to move somewhere more rural. We both grew up in villages and would like the same lifestyle for our DC. However struggling to work out where to look! All the places we've considered so far still seem quite busy and the houses are often right on the main drag, but perhaps there are some other lovely places we haven't considered!? My family live in the South so not looking to move north of Manchester. Any suggestions gratefully received!

Parking at macc is good.

Lots of car parks near by that allow all day paid parking (within a 5min walk). If u don't mind walking 5-10mins then free side street parking is available too.

Commuted to Manc 5days a week before the pandemic. The 8am train was always standing room only but still achievable.

After 3m of finding ur groove (ur fave space, time to arrive, where to stand on the platform etc) I found it a very pleasant journey!

hearmywomanlyroar · 04/06/2022 08:45

@UrsulaPandress yes it's a shame we can't go north as otherwise Saddleworth would probably fit the bill!

Thanks @Needaholidayplease - don't know any of those areas, will investigate.

@NashvilleQueen we're in Stockport

@User555444 this is my worry. Perhaps I've got slight rose tinted specs on how idyllic my childhood in a village is was. I loved it as a child bit I remember being incredulous as a teenager that my parents would choose to live somewhere so boring. I was able to get into London for shopping at least so I think decent transport links to Manchester are probably the key.

@BorisJohnsonsvomitbucket maybe you're right! I think where we are at the moment would be great for teenagers but DC are only little at the moment so there's about 10 years til we get there.

Bollington?

If you're only going in one day a week, then realistically anything between North Wales and Manchester is doable. (I don't know about to the east sorry!). The Holyhead to Manchester train used to be pretty regular (although there have been changes and I don't use it as frequently now as WFH).

Personally, I don't like the ethos around rural Cheshire. I can't describe it, but if you know, you know. But I love living in North Wales. It's a bit less 'country set'.

I have to say I've never considered North Wales, so will look into it!

Go West! Look at places like Cuddington-near Delamere Forest with its own little train station and direct line to Manchester. Takes forever but once a week who cares. Charming village. Sandiway, Hartford are nice. Or look at Frodsham and its surrounding villages like Kingsley-pub, good shop and real community feel. Good line to Manchester and cheap parking at the station and very easy access to motorway.

Pub, shop, community feel - ticks all the boxes. Is it pretty round there too? Will get into right move Smile

@QS888 thank you will look it up.

@thefirstfortyeight - bollington is definitely on our radar but nothing much ever seems to come on the market. Perhaps so nice people don't want to leave!

Have you thought about somewhere closer to home like Woodford or the more rural parts of Poynton?
but agree with you that public transport links would help for teenagers. Or just be prepared to fund an Uber account/ be a taxi service.

maddy68 · 04/06/2022 08:54

New mills
Marple
Knutsford
Wilmslow
Worsley
All lovely

Dodgygeezer · 04/06/2022 08:55

It's not South but what about Holmfirth?

Unescorted · 04/06/2022 09:06

It is the geography and history. All the infrastructure is in the valley. Roads, trains, canals ... It is an industrial landscape. Mills and Thier workforces at the bottom. Farmers on mid section along with mines and quarries. Posh people and shooting moors away from the squalor and smog.

whiteroseredrose · 04/06/2022 09:08

@hearmywomanlyroar, I think it depends if you are at the end of the runway or to the side. We live in Hale and aren't troubled by plane noise at all.

We commute through those villages, so don't know for certain. However, sitting in the pubs in Ashley and Mobberley I've not really noticed planes. They are VERY noticeable on the other side, near Heald Green. We went to Bruntwood Park near John Lewis there. The park is great but the DC spent the whole time watching the planes! They were really noisy.

The only way to tell is to come over and sit outside for a bit - maybe in a nice pub garden - and see what you think.

Subbaxeo · 04/06/2022 12:33

Frodsham is ideal for teens. Direct line to Manchester, Liverpool and Chester. Good bars and restaurants and lovely surrounding countryside. Walk directly onto Sandstone Trail. Small market town rather than village but pretty villages like Kingsley, Alvanley nearby-although if you live in the villages it’s constant lifts!

myhairygoat · 04/06/2022 12:36

Chinley or Hayfield. Fabulous countryside and community

hearmywomanlyroar · 06/06/2022 10:30

@User555444 not keen on Woodford as it doesn't seem to have much of a centre as far as I can tell, just lots of big expensive houses. Will have another look at Poynton. Thanks

@maddy68 i don't think any of those places are really villages? Or do you mean villages nearby?

@Dodgygeezer looks nice but wrong location unfortunately!

@Unescorted makes sense!

@whiteroseredrose that sounds like an excellent plan!

@Subbaxeo thank you, will look into frodsham

@myhairygoat some more to look up, fab Smile

Marple, Romiley, Mottram, Gee Cross?

WeAreTheHeroes · 06/06/2022 10:58

Don't write off New Mills - there is countryside on the doorstep. We live nearby and I can cross the A6 and be out of sight and earshot of it in minutes. Walk for 15-20 minutes and you'd never know it existed. Combs is another lovely village that hasn't been mentioned yet.

WeAreTheHeroes · 06/06/2022 10:59

Marple is really a suburb of Stockport and doesn't feel separate in any way.

hearmywomanlyroar · 06/06/2022 12:12

Thanks @WeAreTheHeroes - I'll investigate further... Smile

Marple, Romiley, Mottram, Gee Cross?

Marple and Romiley feel a bit like slightly more rural suburbs to me, rather than villages. Nice places but probably not what we're after. Don't know Mottram or Gee Cross so will look those ones up, thanks for the suggestion

actiongirl1978 · 06/06/2022 12:28

I grew up in Marple and it was a fab place to grow up with the canals and walking out to the peak district with friends.

Think it's terrible to get in and out of in a car at rush hour now. But trains great.

My dad used to commute to Manchester it's about 20 mins from Marple Station.

Would Marple bridge feel a bit more rural for you?

NashvilleQueen · 06/06/2022 20:30

Mellor more villagey but no centre.

Poynton terrible for traffic.

I would consider the outskirts of a Cheshire town (Bowden, Hale, Alderley Edge, knutsford, Wilmslow)

NashvilleQueen · 06/06/2022 20:30

Lynn!
