Hi all,

So as the subject states, I have been offered a place on a BSc at Huddersfield this September so we will need to relocate from Chepstow!
I have absolutely no idea about the areas at all so having a bit of a panic - can you please help by offering suggestions. I am happy to travel 30-40 minutes if it means we live in a nicer, safer area. Not keen on super busy city life, prefer a quieter town/village but also don't want to be in the middle of completely no where! We will be renting until I finish the course and hopefully look to buy.
Looking at the map I'd be happy moving toward Manchester, Leeds or Sheffield - not particularly fussy(!) but of course have no idea what areas are better for single mums

I am a single parent of a 6 and 8 year old so will need to find appropriate schools too. Please please help would be soo appreciated xx

There's nothing wrong with Huddersfield itself, although I'm not able to be properly helpful and tell you which areas of it are nicest. However, from personal experience, I can warn you to take into account that the whole area is high enough for travel to be affected in wintery weather.

If I was moving back I'd be looking at Shelly, Lepton, Fixby, Lindley or Honley especially if you need Primary schools.

You'll also need to invest in really good waterproofs as it's the wettest place I've ever lived!

Agree with the above, HD8 is a good area. Huddersfield traffic can be a nightmare and 30 minutes can sometimes be from one side of Huddersfield to the other. Leeds or Wakefield will be an hour, even Mirfield to the Uni is 25mins on a good run.

If you can, try slaithwaite, linthwaite, or marsden as these are all on a direct train route into Huddersfield, ( as well as a bus routes but traffic can be horrific): very good areas and good schools.
if I was moving to the area,, those are the places I’d choose.

There are some nice villages to the east towards Wakefield.

Stalybridge
easy train to hudds and the lovely towns before it eg marsden greenfield etc but 15min on train the other way to Manchester
I grew up in stalybridge and it does have lovely old Victorian houses and a few nice bars some areas a bit rusty! But the proximity to both city of Manchester Leeds Huddersfield and the countryside is great

Congratulations!

What’s the subject? Will you need to commute for placements? How often will you need to be in university?

Look at your fuel/ transport costs, then decide.
I’d go with whatever allowed you to walk to schools and campus.

You’ll have placements on a BA SLT and willl need to travel to them. You would be much better basing yourself in Huddersfield because if you do move outside the area to E.g. Leeds, but end with a placement towards Manchester, The travelling will be unbearable. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Huddersfield, it’s a nice town and there are some good schools. In Huddersfield itself, Lindsey, Fixby, Marsh are all good and in walking distance of the Uni (though easier on the bus if you’re at the north end of them perhaps). If you want to move just outside too smaller village, Slaithwaite, Marsden and Kirkburton are all nice.

Good luck!
