Darlington or Richmond, North Yorkshire?

If you worked on Teesside (but had the option of working from home one day a week and condensing hours) would you move to Darlington or Richmond? Currently live in Darlington but selling up. Love Richmond as a place and it’s very me! School bus goes to Darlington from
Richmond which my youngest would need to use for 4 years.
But, worried it’s a little far from work (26 miles from Richmond, currently 9 miles).
Help me decide Smile

Surely house prices are far more in Richmond. I love Richmond though so if money is no object.....

Richmond all the way. Or split the difference and find a village between the two. Does the school bus stop anywhere else? If you move somewhere south west of Darlo it's east to hop onto the A66 from the spur road roundabout or near.

We're now between between Richmond and Darlington and I love having options - market town and indie shops, schools and character as well as proximity to supermarkets, cinema etc.

Richmond, no option.
Beautiful town. Lovely Riverside / moorland walks.
The Yorkshire Trading Company 😆. The Georgian Theatre. The downstairs part of Oliver's on the trading estate 😄

Though with my realistic, logical thinking cap on, it's a bit too far to drive.

What about Yarm as a place to live? Otherwise Richmond is lovely, but it would be a long commute to do four days a week.

Workinghardeveryday · 25/03/2022 21:34

Darlington is miserable. Utterly miserable.

Richmond is lovely.

RandomMess · 25/03/2022 21:39

Surely it needs to be Barnard Castle 🤣🤣🤣🤣

There are some lovely parts of Darlington. Depends if you want more of a town centre or not.

NorthGirlie · 26/03/2022 05:48

I really don’t like Darlington these days and as I’m getting older (50) I am finding my days off work are spent at places like Yarm, Richmond and Barnard Castle - all mentioned in this thread!! You can tell the types of places that I like!!!
I am worried it’s a little far from where I work but would try to condense house and WFH as much as possible. I’ll see what pops up!
I don’t mind the west end area of Darlington but find the town centre awful these days (I never go) and there are far to many houses being built for my liking.
I like Northallerton too!

I don’t mind Eaglescliffe either (easy access to London from there too) but hate the fact it comes with a Stockton postcode. I sound like a snob! I’m not! Ha ha

Sadly, I’m finding this very true!

Look at the villages such as Long Newton, Middleton St George etc or do you want a nearby town centre?

TBH most town centres that used to have chain stores are really suffering now Sad it's the ones that always had boutiques and independent stores that are doing better and attract £

NorthGirlie · 26/03/2022 12:17

Not keen on MSG but like the front on Middleton One Row. Long Newton an option as is Hurworth.

Really don't like Darlo much at these days. Binns has lost its charm and I hate what they have done to the indoor market.
I love Richmond however and can drink in the view from the little bridge that leads down to the river. Beautiful houses and interesting things to look at

Agree - vote for Barney!!

There are lots of small villages in between Darlington and Richmond however houseprices in rural areas have shot up due to WFH.

Foxfeeder · 13/06/2022 18:18

I’d not want the drive from Richmond to Teesside 4 days a week, or the bank up to the A1 in the winter but agree that Richmond is nicer than Darlo. Can your child move schools?

Spanielsarepainless · 31/07/2022 16:27

Richmond is one of my favourite places, but there isn't much on the market at the moment.

I was there the other week and no- there isn't. Still had a good mooch round the charity shops though and went , as always to look at 'my view' at Cornforth Hill
