Moving to North Yorkshire

I have a work from home job which means no geographical ties! I wondered if there were recommendations for somewhere quiet that's family friendly, with a good community spirit, a few amenities and outstanding schools for my (currently 3 year old) twin girls, but close to countryside walks for my dog. I've so far been looking around Harrogate but any recommendations greatly appreciated! TIA!

Thirsk and surrounding villages? Depending on how quiet you want it, one of the villages might be better but Thirsk has a decent amenities in the town centre, its on the edge of the moors, train station for if you need to get anywhere for work.

Ripon is nice, Northallerton, Knaresborough.

milly74 · 01/01/2022 08:41

I would also recommend Thirsk we are hoping to move there in a few years time

Ripon is nice. Decent high street and schools.

Wetherby is nice and Boston Spa is a favourite of mine.

Hemsley is also lovely and a bit more rural than the others

Some great suggestions but a key factor is how important is access to say Leeds and/or York? Is public transport access important as if so then Harrogate starts becoming a really excellent suggestion as it has good bus and train access to both

Malton

SeaisBlue · 31/01/2022 01:34

Bedale? Couldn’t comment on schools there though but people travel far and wide for grammar school in Ripon

Firstly if your WFH don't go too rural or you will struggle with Internet.

tothemoonandbackbuses · 10/06/2022 17:01

satellite internet is available in most of rural North Yorkshire
just be aware that it is a very touristy county and do you want to be in an extremely touristy town when you want to be able to get on with daily life. It might rule out Whitby for example but not thirsk. Thirsk does get a lot of tourists but not on the scale of Whitby
the majority of schools are good or above.

We used to live in Ripon and I can highly recommend it.

No it isn't available in all areas of North Yorkshire. This is the mistake many make. The village where I live we have had people move in and out pretty quick as the internet is very poor and they could not work from home.

Bickles · 13/06/2022 18:01

You have just described Skipton

Friendship101 · 13/06/2022 18:04

Ripon.

Friendship101 · 13/06/2022 18:05

Or skipton or ilkley if you like West Yorkshire.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/06/2022 18:07

I lived in Thirsk for a few years, and liked it. That was before we had DD, and I was commuting to York so didn't really find out if it had a good community spirit or not.

I liked Northallerton, it was just that bit bigger in terms of having a few shops (including an awesome deli and a Betty's!)

Ripon seems very nice, though do get a good survey... I gather that sometimes large holes appear. Nowhere near a train line if that matters to you.

Octomore · 13/06/2022 18:14

Skipton / Ilkley area is lovely. You could even go a bit more rural and look at e.g. Grassington.

Most people seem to be focussing on the Vale of York and surrounds, but there are many other nice bits of North Yorkshire!

Randomuser9876 · 13/06/2022 18:16

What's your budget and how big do you want?

How remote do you want to be, ie do you want a town or village?

I just noticed the thread was started in January, I wonder if the OP has had a chance to take a look around yet.
