Currently in the process of trying to relocate to Great Missenden. What is the best way to get involved in the community and any tips on good areas for walks, places for a coffee or fun things to do locally?

I don’t really have much to offer, I lived nearby when I was much younger, so had no concept of proper grown up life!

The only nugget I can offer is the Polecat Inn. I really hope it hasn’t changed. It’s a really old pub and their food was always amazing. Their Half Pint of large prawns with garlic mayo is probably what I’d choose as my starter for my last meal.

I’ll go down memory lane on a couple of other things - but they’re from a long time ago!

The Home of Rest for Horses at Speen - I loved going their as a kid, magnificent horses there.

For simpler time’s, the Wye River - you’ll be able to find where it hits at the nearest point to you.

For a bit of a drive, Burnham Beeches holds good memories. Lovely woodland.

The Royal Standard in Forty Green.

Sorry, not very child-focussed ideas, it’s a long time since I was in the area.

How was your move op? Thinking of moving to Great Missenden this year. What's it like living there please? I like to buy loads of fruits from markets about every weekend. Love in-expensive exercise classes, good public leisure centre, high street, open spaces/parks and strong evangelical church.
GM ticks the boxes for schools though price is somewhat high and not many detached houses have come up. Please to do a drive round next month and will appreciate your views. Thanks.

Hi Delectable, I really enjoy living here. The main advantage is the outdoor space/proximity to nature. Looking at your shopping list of what you want I think I would look more closely at the bigger nearby towns that have a proper high street and leisure centre like Amersham, Chesham and High Wycombe. The shops in GM are great for a browse but you need to drive for things you need including markets. There is no leisure centre in GM. A lot of people run or cycle for fitness here or walk their dogs. I’m not aware of any exercise classes but there may be some. There is a church in GM that has lots of things going on like concerts. I think it is CoE but you might want to double check. I hope that helps.

Thanks @Hodgewell1 we live in Central London at the moment and I drive to a market just south of the river. I drove to the previous markets in my two previous residences too so I assume High Wycombe would be the place for a fruit and veg and ethnic Market which is fine by me. GM is village so I anticipate it won't have loads of stuff going on in it but wanted to know where locals go to for stuff and what they have available locally. Thanks again for your insight.

Hi Delectable, you might be pleasantly surprised by the grocer in GM opposite the Co op. It has a great selection of fruit and veg and spices and condiments for lots of ethnic dishes. It’s as good as the veg markets I used to go to in London. GM is an easy drive to High Wycombe too. Hope you find a property you like in GM. It’s worth the wait.

@Hodgewell1 I hope we do. Shall keep looking and plan to drive round in a few weeks.

High Wycombe doesn't have a great market anymore. There is an ethnic fruiterers but nothing much else. Mainly food vans.

There is a fruiterers in Prestwood - N&P I think they are called and are at the brewery on the main road. Other than that there is a lovely market in Wendover and a fruit and veg shop at World's End Garden Centre in Wendover.

@Furries really sorry to break this to you, but the Polecat has fallen Sad. It is a very good gastro pub now, part of a fast growing chain called Oakman, but it is not the charming little place it was.

Oh no, that’s really sad - another institution gone. At least I have my memories!

newbiename · 23/06/2022 03:42

High Wycombe is horrible. You could go to the market in Wendover , once a week.

Mumblechum0 · 23/06/2022 04:34

@newbiename agree re Wycombe! Wendover is much nicer but obviously much smaller

Porridgeislife · 23/06/2022 05:53

We’ve been out here now for just over a year and markets like those in London just don’t exist unfortunately. There are a few Asian food shops in Wycombe but again nothing like the average high street in London.

Stag82 · 23/06/2022 06:06

The nostalgia… grew up in Hazlemere (near High Wycombe) and this has brought back lots of memories. Don’t know how near but loved black park as a kid, Hughenden Valley and wendover woods. Don’t know if that’s helpful.

AppleTree16 · 23/06/2022 07:36

Chesham has a market Wednesday and Saturday, two swimming pools and lots of exercise classes. Amersham very similar! Both are a quicker drive than High Wycombe.
Wendover is lovely - great selection of shops and restaurants. I’d move there in a heartbeat if it wasn’t in the wrong direction for work! Wendover Woods in particular is great - parkrun on a Saturday and very family friendly.
