Village / small town near Reading?

I work in Reading and am looking to move closer. I am used to a reasonably quiet place to live, v. safe and green preferably with some amenities (food shop / library / GPs or post office).
I was wondering if anyone could recommend anywhere within 5-10 miles of Reading which offered walks on the doorstep, a few amenities close by and good schools but otherwise a fairly sedate and peaceful life!

Henley / Shiplake

I love Shiplake and Henley but they are hideously expensive. Wallingford and surrounding villages are lovely but a bit more affordable.

The cluster of villages that is Sonning Common, Kidmore End, Peppard Common etc is lovely. Depends on your budget though. Caversham/Emmer Green are a bit closer in but are also nice areas - and have the benefit of being walkable/cycle-able to avoid the shit traffic.

In this area I'm afraid your budget is fairly crucial.

Would Green Park Village appeal at all? It's a love/hate kind of place.

Pangbourne, Tidmarsh, Whitchurch are lovely though very pricey and A LOT
of bankers.

Caversham & Emmer Green are perfectly nice but they are definitely suburban rather than rural.

Woodcote is a bit more affordable

Twyford? Good schools and a handful of shops. Charvil (may be slightly cheaper than Twyford), Wargrave or Hurst?

Woodley isn't a village as such, nor so separate from Reading, but distinct enough and has its own schools, shopping precinct and library etc.

Arborfield has a lot of new builds, not sure about its amenities though. There's a relatively new secondary school (Oakbanks), I don't know the primary schools.

I'd go south if I were you. Arborfield is nice but might be too small. Have you considered the villages near Bracknell etc? Maybe Finchampstead around california country park (which also has a library/community centre at one end) or out west by Wellington country park might suit you.

Burghfield/Mortimer have woods on the doorstep for walks and good schools, couple of shops etc.

South is so expensive -what about moving west along the railway line
