Where to live near Swansea?

I’m looking to be near the coast or within countryside and able to travel to the coast.

Rural, village type as opposed to an estate.

No need for schools.

Able to drive so no need for transport.

I’ll be commuting to Swansea (Sketty side) 3 days a week. Don’t want to be more than 90 minutes out.

Any ideas?

I’m moving from England and will be spending some time there next month to explore and get a better feel for the area but would like to narrow down some locations to focus on.

Hi I live in Sketty. What's your budget as there are more expensive properties in Mumbles and Gower areas?

TroysMammy · 11/09/2021 12:52

The are villages down the Gower but most areas in Swansea just merge into each other.

Jooox · 11/09/2021 13:50

Budget would be 400k.

Mumbles and Gower are on my list.

Mumbles is near to Sketty and although they say it's a village it doesn't fit into my idea of a village. Gower has villages like Llanrhidian, Llangennith, Reynoldston and Oxwich for example, these places are quiet in the winter. Penclawdd is on the estuary and has a Doctors surgery, pharmacy, chip shop, corner shop and a lovely ice cream parlour. Further down the road towards the Gower is Llanmorlais and Crofty. Gowerton is classed as a village but has expanded propertywise since I lived there as a child. It has a train station, takeaways, pubs, a Co-op, cafes/restaurants, vets, dentist, GP surgery for example but there are a few housing estates there.

I would suggest a road called Cefn Stylle which is on the road between Gowerton and Penclawdd. There is a property there for sale in your budget. Up that road through lanes is Three Crosses which has a more rural village feel but not as many amenities. It should take you less than an hour to get from the end of the Gower to Sketty anyway.

I’d second where @TroysMammy is suggesting as I’m also familiar with the area.
How close do you want to be to the beach?

Jooox · 11/09/2021 20:51

Thank you @TroysMammy that’s really helpful. I’ll include your suggestions in my exploration.

I’ve visited the Gower peninsula for holidays and adored it but it’s obviously very different when looking at it for living.

When I say village, I basically mean an area that isn’t very built up, no estates and a few amenities.

Are there any areas to put on my ‘definitely avoid’ list?

I’m desperate to move away from crime and rubbish and not feeling safe.

Also anywhere to avoid that wouldn’t be thrilled to have an English resident? The reason I ask is because a friend moved to an area in Scotland and wasn’t very well received (I know it’s a different country but worth checking).

I’ve booked a long holiday let to stay in whilst I explore and get a feel for some places and then will probably do the same in or near the area I prefer before buying.

@CelloYouveGotABass I’m probably pushing my luck but a walk to the beach would be amazing. I’d happily sacrifice a shorter commute to be closer to the coast.

I wouldn't say there were any unwelcoming areas but obviously you'd get the occasional idiotic, narrow minded bigot wherever you go. Swansea is pretty diverse as we have 2 hospitals, a large university, many people of different ethnic minorities and is also a City of Sanctuary.

I'd say look at Swansea West and you can see from a map where the built up areas are and the rural areas although personally speaking I'd avoid Gorseinon and Pontardulais, lovely garden centre there though.

There is crime wherever you go and Swansea is no different although it has less violent crime than big cities but there is still the occasional shocking crime committed.

If you wish for more information before or during your reconnaissance mission of Swansea please feel free to PM me.

Thank you @TroysMammy that’s extremely helpful and very kind of you.

If they’re all like you in Swansea then I’m in for a treat.

I’ll definitely take you up on the DM offer once I’m over there and narrowing my search.

I moved to the area 18 years ago from England.
I’ve lived in Horton on Gower,
Beautiful and on coast, no facilities. West Wales near Llandrindod ( v rural, more welsh speaking, further from coast) in both cases commuted to Swansea or Neath for work.
Now living in west swansea, nearer to work and prefer the (
Small) city to living rurally.
Gower lovely but budget won’t go far.
Sketty itself is lovely, as is uplands although studenty which I love but is not for everyone. Mumbles very busy. You might consider West Cross, Mayals, Newton, Murton, bishopston
Or Southgate. Pennard always seems good value for South Gower.
Villages inland - look at felindre and surrounds, Craig
cefn park, upper Brynamman. Probably less
Diverse.

I’ve never experienced any anti English sentiment and would never return to England, it is an amazing place to live.
Good luck!
