Does a place like this exist?

We left London to live in a commuter town a couple of years ago and haven't missed the city once. We like being closer to family, being able to buy a property and get out of the rat race.

Since covid, DH no longer has to work in London and he has been told that once everyone is vaccinated the most he will have to go in is once a week, but could be more once a month. Other jobs in his field are work from home. I've also started a job which is full time work from home.

We have started maxing out the space in our house and want permanent offices for us both as well as more bedrooms so we can have at least one more child. We are thinking of fulfilling our dreams of moving to Devon/Dorset/Cornwall way and getting a place with more space and land. We think somewhere on the outskirts of Exeter so dh can get a train to London when needed. I would love Cornwall but I think it's just a bit too far, unless anyone has suggestions for being near a London trainline there. (Dh would probably stay one night a week in London either way).

Our dream is a place semi rural with a local village but a drive to town like Exeter where we could catch the train.

We love the idea of a local village even if very small, but we are also quite liberal minded and I wonder if we would fit in. What is village life like these days? Where would you recommend?

It's basically where I live. Woodbury Nr Exeter. A bit expensive but everyone wants to live here for the reasons you state. We are selling in Sept if you are interested 😂

It's very liberal- most of the people here have moved from the south east and they are mainly professionals.

If you want a really woo place then Totnes is pretty out there!

I moved away from a village near Exeter 14 years ago as it was just so busy. It's not as rural as you think and SO many people moving there has changed it. North Devon is much much quieter and much more rural.

Where are you moving to and why?

This is really interesting. Do you think it's easy enough to make friends? What kind of things do people do as hobbies? Our older family would move down with us as want to downsize anyway.

We are moving into Exeter as our sons are at secondary there and we both work there. I just fancy a change too- I've lived here for 25 years! It's a great village- loads of people our age (early forties), loads of kids, enough going on but not too much. Really easy to make friends if you make the effort, esp if you have kids.

Boys do cricket and piano in the village, there are two pubs, Woodbury common in the doorstep, beaches, city, Dartmoor. You'll never run out of things to do. M5 jct 30 is three miles away.

Chunky is right- if you want proper rural then go mid or North Devon, but if you want quick links to London stay near Exeter.
