How bad is the Aircraft noise in Petts Wood?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone live underneath the flight path in Petts Wood area?

I’m buying a house in Kingsway, towards the side where Willet Recreation Ground is.

I just found out that it is exactly underneath the flight path, I wonder if anyone is living in the similar condition suffering the noise of the aircrafts? Are the aircrafts passing by very often? I wonder if the noise annoy you when you are in the garden, or even inside the house when all doors and windows open?

I have heard the noise when I was on the street, but cannot imagine how it will feel like if you have that all days for years?

I move away from a London high street to avoid the noise, I hope to end up in a quiet and peaceful place. Please help me with your experience.

Thank you in advance.
Phoebe

I live in Petts Wood, but the other side of the tracks to Kingsway. We occasionally notice planes passing over our garden from Biggin Hill, but in my opinion, it's never been a problem.

The only place I've lived which is truly under a flight path is East Dulwich, and I really noticed the noise there. Petts Wood is nothing like that. Smile

I know there are some other Petts Wood residents on Mumsnet so you could ask on the Property board as well.

I live under the flight path and it really isn’t an issue. They did have one hammer head shaped aircraft that makes a loud noise but I believe that has now fallen foul of noise abatement controls and doesn’t use the airport as a result.

Kingsway is a lovely road

I used to live there, it was absolutely fine. Planes were there but high enough not to notice really. I was there when the Icelandic volcano stopped all planes for a while, I definitely noticed they weren’t there then, particularly in the woods where it’s fairly quiet, but day to day is fine.

Petts Wood is in absolutely no way rural, not sure why you’ve posted in this topic. Just mentioning as you may be disappointed when you get there if you are expecting rural!

I think a lot of the SE is under a flight path. I've lived in Dulwich, Sydenham and parts of East Sussex, always been under a flight path. Never been an issue.

Thanks everyone for very helpful advice. I guess I just over exaggerated the issue then. I can't wait to finalise the buying process to move in soon. Petts Wood seems to be a lovely place to live :)

@Orangedaisy, you are right, I didn't feel rural is the perfect word to describe Petts Wood either. But I was struggling to find a topic to fit my question in. It's lucky that my question still made it way to reach the right experts. Thank you. :)

@Phoebe2203 - I am also considering a move to the area (Towncourt Crescent) wondered if you moved to Petts Wood in the end and what your thoughts have been so far about the flight and train noise?

Or if anyone has any additional thoughts about the hours cap being lifted/new aviation college/early and late flying hours?

I appreciate this thread is over a year old now but any thoughts from those living in the area on flight/train noise would be much appreciated.

Thanks Smile

@Alice1090 - I have moved to the area for nearly a year now. It’s absolutely fine with the airplane noise, it is not that frequent and noisy as I was worried. I find the area very quiet and peaceful. So the airplanes are nothing to worry about.
My street is a bit further away from the train station than Towncourt Crescent so I cannot comment about the train noise in that street.
Towncourt Crescent is very beautiful. The only thing I may consider is Willett park, there are many activities in the summer, if your garden is toward the park, then it may be not as quiet as the houses in the opposite side of the street. However, don’t let that put you down just yet, I am too picky here, even when there are activities (cricket games, kids playing), the noise is not at bad level at all, and it may be better to have the park than a noisy neighbour at the back garden :)
You may want to try to visit on a sunny Saturday to see how the park is.
