Advice on artsy towns within half hour of Bristol

I am sure this has been asked 1 million times but here I go again.

I am looking for the holy grail.

We are planning to relocate from London to the Bristol/Somerset area in 2021. I will be starting up a yoga/massage/retreat business eventually so we want to be in lovely countryside, a pretty town, ideally fairly lively to give me some business and with a creative vibe. Hubby might be working in Bristol at least part of the week so ideally half an hour to 45 mins commute.

Obvs we are going to explore the area a lot but we will only have a few weekends to do this without our kids so want to make sure we hit the hotspots.

Would be great to have options for good primary and secondary schools.

Any recommendations would be amazing.

Thank you.

Might be towards the upper end of your commute but: Stroud, Wells, Glastonbury?

Snowpatrolling · 03/01/2020 18:47

I live in keynsham between Bristol and bath, surrounded by fields etc.
Lovely town. 20 mins from Bristol in good traffic, 40 in bad traffic.
I used to live in wells, again lovely little town with some smaller country villiages surrounding it. Hour commute to Bristol (I do this every Tuesday to care for my Nan who lives in wookey) again lovely little villiage just outside of wells.
Glastonbury is lovely (used to live there!) but an hour and a half commute to Bristol In real time traffic.

You are definitely looking for the holy grail - hardly any towns within 30mins of Bristol! Can't add to any of the suggestions above.

reefedsail · 03/01/2020 18:51

Bruton might work. Or Castle Carey.

TerrifiedandWorried · 03/01/2020 18:53

Chepstow

reefedsail · 03/01/2020 18:55

Umm, my suggestions would be much more than 30 mins to centre of Bristol. Sorry.

Stroud.

BestZebbie · 03/01/2020 18:56

Not Wells! Your business would be a perfect fit for Glastonbury, but would also face stiff competition there.

Millie2013 · 03/01/2020 18:57

Thornbury?

Alsoco · 03/01/2020 18:57

Doesn’t really fit your criteria but don’t rule out Portishead! It’s lovely.

EduCated · 03/01/2020 18:59

Your issue is going to be where in Bristol you want to be 30 mins from - 30 mins from the outskirts is a very different prospect to 30 mins from the centre!

I live in Keynsham waves at@Snowpatrolling and it's convenient for Bristol by road, rail and bus. I'm aware from our local community page that there are a few yoga teachers (although I don't do yoga and wouldn't recognise as downward dog if it bit me).
Nailsea and Yate both have good links to Bristol for commuters, but I'm not sure if they have the vibe you are looking for.

RubyD · 03/01/2020 19:01

Amazing, thank you. We will check as many of these out as possible. Something will have to give no doubt but good to have recommendations XX

Yeah sorry being very vague. It won't be me doing it but i would say max of 1 hour to the centre. x

stay in london. please :)

followthestardis · 03/01/2020 19:03

there's enough yoga retreats already in the sw :)

panemet · 03/01/2020 19:03

Frome sounds like the town you want. Dunno how far to Bristol - further than 30 mins, but everywhere is.

Which bit of Bristol he needs to get to makes a difference. If central then a town with a train line will be a better bet.

dancingelf · 03/01/2020 19:04

Have a look at the area near to Cheddar on the edge of the Mendips - Axbridge, Shipham, Winscombe, Draycott. I wouldn't say Axbridge is arty but it has its own little cinema and a bigger social scene than you might expect. A number of folk who have moved from London and plenty of people into art, photography and also those interested in wellbeing. Beautiful walks and countryside, 40 mins to Bristol. Happy hunting, your move sounds exciting and I'm sure you will love Somerset.

followthestardis · 03/01/2020 19:04

and there's enough people too :)

hazelnutlatte · 03/01/2020 19:05

Stroud is exactly what you're looking for - train to Bristol in 30 mins, car would take a bit longer, especially in rush hour. Lovely countryside nearby and it's got a bit of a hippy / alternative vibe so plenty of potential yoga students

Pineappleunder · 03/01/2020 19:23

Wootton under edge

TerrifiedandWorried · 03/01/2020 20:10

Centre of Bristol to outskirts can easily take an hour...

ChristmasCarcass · 03/01/2020 20:13

30mins from central Bristol is Bristol...

MHsupport · 03/01/2020 20:16

Where I live has been mentioned above, but I agree there are more than enough “relocated from London” people driving up property prices and changing the vibe (not for the better) and I know a number of yoga teachers struggling to fill their classes as the market is flooded. Sorry!
