Alternatives to Oil heating

We have oil central heating.
I had a new boiler put in 2 years ago and I am finding it still is very expensive.
Has anyone changed from Oil to a newer more green alternative and what are the benefits?
I've read some horror stories online about the expense of biomass systems.
I don't want to change to LPG because of problems with this previously..
Any experience/suggestions please!

When you say expensive, what are you talking? We don't find it bad at all.
We l,ifill our 1000 litre tank approx every 8 months. Our oil bill is way less than £1000 per annum; this is for a four bed 3 recep. house. This compares favourably with mains gas (although that is not available here anyway). I think our bills are fairly low because firstly our house is very well insulated and fully double glazed. Second, we never set the thermostat above 20 degrees (we favour the extra jumper approach!). Third, the heating is on between 6.30 and 9.30 in the morning and 4 to 10 in the evening only, and finally, we have a multi fuel stove which pumps out so much heat it brings the temp up enough to turn the heating off more often than not, so the boiler often doesn't come on in the pm when the stove is lit unless its very cold. We spend about an extra £150 a year on logs and coal.
Do you have your boiler serviced annually? Have you checked your tank isn't leaking?
Alternatives would be ground source or air source heat pumps, which I know nothing about, but I would have thought that if there is room for improving insulation initially (if needed) that would be a cheaper way to start.

I concur that it isn't the oil - price has gone up recently but it is only a little more expensive per unit heat than mains gas. A new boiler should use massively less oil than an old replacement.

nothing green about biomass which is imported wood chips.

how's the property insulation? Do you have thick curtains which you close? do you shut doors? do you keep the temperature at a reasonable level? The only way to be 'greener' with heating is to use less of it.
