Hi, we're looking at buying a house that has a shared septic tank. What do I need to know about maintenance costs and schedule? Any questions I need to ask?

Sounds a bit odd. Isn't there enough room for you to have your own septic tank?
Generally, they don't require much effort to maintain but will it be big enough for two households?
Years ago, my old neighbour had problems with hers blocking up and shit running all over her garden. Shock
Luckily, we were far enough away for it not to impact upon us and she did have a lovely healthy looking lawn the following year. Grin

We're looking at buying a cottage on a farm estate. The whole estate belonged to one family, so I don't think it was an issue for this reason. The tank is on an area of the estate that is shared access BTW 2 cottages and a farmhouse.

Sounds like there are potentially more issues to clarify as well as a shared septic tank?
Things like 'rights of way' can be a minefield. We spent over £30k buying off the rights of way from two other people with adjoining fields along our long driveway.

The rights of way/access have already been worked out by vendor's solicitors when she decided to divide up the estate instead of keeping it intact. Most of estate has already been sold, so shared driveway, shared access to fields and septic tank already arranged. Thanks for heads up though, it was the first thing I asked about as access and clarification of what we would be potentially responsible for was a major concern for me. Smile

Not in the UK but we share a septic system (3 chamber system) with the farm over the road and it really hasn't been a problem. It is physically on their property and because it is a chamber system only the waste remain to be pumped out. They let us know when they are calling the sewage pumping truck and we pay half the bill - usually once a year and costs around £200.

The system did need to be renewed completely a few years ago as the grit and sands had not been replaced since the 1960s. The farmer asked whether we wanted to get a firm in or whether to pay half the costs of him doing the work - we chose the latter.

Hi maybe a bit late.
We bought a house with shared septic tank. Three houses and a pub(2shares) and have had no problem. It is emptied a couple of times a year and we just pay our share and that’s it.

You just have to be considerate in what you use eg no Domestos
