Moving to/Living in East Devon

Hi mums, to cut a very long thought process short, does anyone live in/have moved to East Devon? If so, what's it like please? I have two outdoor loving kids aged 7 and 4, who love beaches, brownies, gymnastics, horse riding etc so love plenty to do, we're thinking of moving to the area.

We relocated 'up north' two years ago and it hasn't worked out as we'd hoped, so I'm naturally nervous about a complete change again. I have been to the area looking at schools and a couple of property and actually wanted to find the negatives and failed, it was lovely. Had a great flight down there and met some very pleasant people and saw some decent schools etc. Just want us all to settle somewhere and get it right this time!

Any advice, good and bad on the area would be really appreciated xx

Hi why not broccoli
In answer to your question. Yes King’s is an inclusive school and all the kids are allowed to be themselves and everyone accepts you for who you are. My daughter has a much more open minded approach than when our boys were young. No one judges what you look like or how you are at kings school and lots of help if your child needs it and student support have an open door for any student that needs advice or help. We haven’t really needed this as our daughter has settled so well and she is very outgoing and sporty. Kings also do project week every July and the kids get to choose what to do for a week including a week away or daily activities, both sporty and other interests. This is so the new year 7s get the whole school to themselves for a week, get to know the teachers and the school etc. My daughter chose a London week last year and this year is on a surfing holiday in Cornwall. She wouldn’t dream of ever leaving Kings as she absolutely loves it there and you hardly ever here of bullying, it just doesn’t seem to happen there. There are many outsiders here and after actually going through the usual teething problems of leaving friends, family , feeling lonely, not knowing what to do or where to go, there is no one I know who are thinking of or have moved away, everyone seems to love East Devon as an area and wouldn’t live anywhere else. Me included. I count myself very lucky of living somewhere like this and have given my daughter a fantastic opportunity of living the dream of everything she could want, beaches, countryside, cities with great shops and activities, good trains and bus services and her freedom. Good luck with everything

Can we bump this thread please, I'm new here and posted earlier today about south Devon. Was advised to check out east and now really excited to look into this further as reviews are brilliant!! Will be renting first, moving by the end of the year with 2 children under 5. We sold our house in Midlands and now in rented ready to take the plunge down there! Staying in shaldon next week to consider south more, that was the plan but we will definitely spend a day or 2 looking around the east now

Any opinions on Honiton?

I relocated to South Devon almost 13 years ago now. I am originally from Greater London.

Moved down here following the birth of my first child and the fact my mum & dad has already relocated down here.

I started in Exeter which I still love but circumstances then brought us to Newton Abbot which has some very nice areas and is well connected to most places.

I would certainly recommend Devon as a lovely place to bring up children. Like most places it has areas that aren't so desirable but the fact we have beaches and Moors on our doorstep is the real pull.

I would say however that the downside to being down here is career opportunities and salary versus cost of living.

Hi - lovely to see this post. We are currently also living in the Midlands and are planning to put the house on the market next autumn..

It’s great to see so many positive stories.

Has anyone relocated with primary aged children?

My eldest will be doing to secondary the year we move so hoping colyton/kings for her.

However little one will be going into year 2 which worries me more :/ has anyone been through an in year admission in the area.. ?

Hi - just wondering if anyone made the move and if so how are you finding it? Now in a similar boat as wanting to relocate to similar areas with a 6yr old...
