Move to York?

Hi all,

Not exactly rural, but couldn't find another heading that fitted!

My partner and I are considering moving from South East London to York. We are in our early 40's with first baby due in March.

Where's nice to live in/near York? We'd like to be within 2-5 miles of city centre. Also has anyone else made the move from London to York and what was your experience?

Thanks x

Fulford and Bishopthorpe are nice.

I moved London to south of york via somewhere else - would never go back, I love it. Lots to do, lovely city, much less traffic etc.

I would move on to Ilkley or Harrogate if work allowed though to get even more of a good thing.

Thank you so much! I'll take a look at those places. Glad it worked out for you :)

York is brilliant. I now live about half way between Leeds and York, having lived in Leeds for about 15 years prior to moving, and I love being closer to York now.

Definitely agree about Fulford, that pretty much always comes up as the number 1 area. Avoid Acomb.

There's lots of very nice villages within a couple miles if you wanted to go a bit more rural - traffic into York isn't great but it's not terrible either.

Thank you Bosswitch 😃👍🏻

York is lovely and a great place to bring up children. Schools are probably not on your radar yet but they are (mainly) very good.

The Heworth / Stockton Lane area is also very nice and leafy, and about a half hour walk from the centre.

Thanks strawbyog! Good to know about the schools 👍🏻

Hey! We moved from London to York this August, and it has been absolutely wonderful. We're so happy. I didn't realise I wasn't happy before, but just love everything about it here.

We moved to near the city centre, as couldn't quite take the quietness of the suburbs yet. We also needed to be very close to the Minster, as our son has become chorister there and has to rehearse and do services a zillion times a week.

A friend moved to Fulford, on the main road, and says she's a bit lonely. I think it's wisest to move to a residential area with lots of quiet streets, but where everyone walks, not drives, to get to know lots of people. If we could be further from the Minster I'd like to live in the Bishopsthorpe Road area - near the amazing Rowntree Park - or perhaps off Bootham. Though it's rubbish there for secondary catchment.

Poppleton is also nice, and in the catchment for Manor (which is a very good school).

Other side of the city, Dunnington is an absolutely lovely village (with a reasonable selection of local shops, doctors surgery, dentist, vet etc) but close enough to easily get into the city and also in the all-important Fulford catchment area. Also very close to some major transport links but still with a nice rural feel.

If you want to be in the city itself, Heworth is worth a look, as is Heslington and the Stockton Lane area is a nice leafy suburb.

Another desirable village is Bishopthorpe (Archbishop's Palace, nice riverside walks).

Hi there. I hope the OP doesn’t mind me joining the conversation. Smile I’m new to mumsnet. We’re looking at moving to York too and don’t know where to start. We’ve moved to the UK from Melbourne 6 years ago. We originally planned on moving to York at the time but ended up in Teesside to be near family. Hasn’t worked out as planned so decided to upstick again and move to York. We’ve sold our house and now renting (until DS finishes high school next year).
Question is, where in York is best to live? Unlike OP, my kids are older so won’t need to be in any catchment area for schools. We want to be in a nice area with good community, with easy access to city centre. We’ve looked at some villages and liked Poppleton, Bishopthorpe and Dunnington. (DH and I like the quietness of being in a village. Then again sometimes I have a hankering for the vibes of the city. I’m confused!)
ClaireyFL have you moved? How do you find living in York?
herbaceous I read your original post, sounds like you’ve done well with your move from London. Are you still enjoying York?
Hope anyone of you lovely people of York can help.
