Bit of a long shot this!

We moved some time ago from Beverley which we loved, to the little bit of NY that meets EY and SY. Obviously we knew it was more agribusiness/empty than pretty market town but still I feel we aren't getting the best from it!

Places within 30 mins of us are Selby, York, Doncaster. Does anyone know the area, any recommendations of great things to do, places to go etc?

It's super convenient for both our jobs, but at the moment I keep dashing back to Beverley or up to Ilkley every time I get a holiday (obviously York is great too).

I’m from further north but looking at the map you should be within 30 minutes of the Yorkshire sculpture park which is huge and full of brilliant things to see and do. Slightly further away you’ve got the Hepworth gallery in Wakefield which won “best art gallery” last year. It’s small but very welcoming and has great events like market days for small producers and artists to show what they are doing, as well as plenty of talks and other activities.

Not sure what you enjoy doing but of course you’ve got fantastic walks on your doorstep. I do think the pretty market towns are a bit further away as you suggest...

What sort of activities do you enjoy? And are you looking for solo / couples' / family activities?

I moved from central London to the same area (possibly exactly the same area but there are a few that fall into the category you describe) 8 years ago and thought it was a bit empty at first but have discovered tons since Smile The key to settling in a new place is definitely trying things where you are rather than bolting back to places you know.

Rother Valley Country Park for watersports
Yorkshire Wildlife Park
Forbidden Corner
Lightwater Valley

catsbeensickagain · 27/08/2018 09:26

Nicola thank you - good reminder about the sculpture park. We enjoy outdoor things but are in quite a flat/farming bit of land so have to take a drive to them (not far though)

Apples I have a big power station near me if that narrows it down! We are probably looking for family type things mostly. We enjoy walking, NT type places, outdoor things. Lots a drive away just trying to find our local gems I guess (and possibly finding settling into a smaller community hard)

Bunny not been to Rother Vally will look. Love the wildlife park, I work about 10 mins from there so know that one well. Great reminder on forbidden corner

catsbeensickagain I'm guessing you're somewhere near Ferrybridge or Eggborough so I'll suggest:

  • Nostell Priory (NT)
  • Farmer Copley's cafe and farm in Pontefract
  • St Aidan's RSPCA reserve
  • Beaches out east like Fraisethorpe
  • Forbidden Corner
  • Doncaster markets and deli
  • The Hepworth
  • Yorkshire Sculpture Park
  • Howden - great little pubs and deli type places and such a cute town

Hope that helps! I'd say the best thing I've done to get to know people since moving is meeting people through work and mum activities.

BikeRunSki we must live very close to each other Smile The Kitchen in Howden was the deli I was thinking of with the name I couldn't remember!

BikeRunSki · 30/08/2018 21:28

Apples, I live well into West Yorkshire, but visit Goole-Snaith-Doncaster area for work at least once a week.

BikeRunSki · 31/08/2018 04:13

Room in the Broom walk at Wintersett Reservoir, Wakefield
Gruffallo walk at Woodlesford

catsbeensickagain · 31/08/2018 06:28

@BikeRunSki @ApplestheHare goodness you have nailed the area! I'm not in Snaith but very close by! We love Kitchen.
There are some fantastic ideas there, some that we have visited (but in my slump I have forgotten) and plenty that we have never done. Apples - I think that you have mentioned something that is causing my issue, this is the first place we have lived since our children are older and the mum things have become much harder and less frequent!

BikeRunSki I live in West Yorkshire too now but used to live in a village further east that was on the border of south, north and east. Our post always reached us but was often addressed to different parts of Yorks.

ApplestheHare · 31/08/2018 07:17

catsbeensickagain in that case, I'd focus on work colleagues (if you're working), neighbours (if you plan to stay where you are) and your own interests. I'm not sure what you like to do but in our village we have running club, Zumba, arts and crafts groups, pottery workshops, etc.

Neighbours have been great for us. We've got a lovely street and regularly have parties, walk dogs together, bake for each other, etc. I reckon it took me about 4/5 years to feel like Yorkshire was 'home' but I'm happy that I did Smile

ApplestheHare · 31/08/2018 07:18

Sorry cats, just seen in your OP that you're both working!
