Relocating to Norfolk

Rosybear · 28/07/2018 15:50

Hi there,
We are a family of three, daughter is almost 7 years old.
We are looking at relocating to Norfolk. Any areas that we should avoid?
Where is the best place to live?
Many thanks

Ours is a big ol' county, are you thinking coastal or more in land? How close/far do you want to be from the bright lights of Norwich or other towns?

Rosybear · 28/07/2018 16:20

We want to be fairly close to Norwich as Hubby will probably find work there so will need to commute there. Have been looking at Wymondham, Attleborough, suburbs of Norwich and Cromer. Not sure if Cromer will be too touristy?

Wymondham is always popular. Depending how isolated you want to be you can actually stay much closer to Norwich and live in some absolutely idyllic places. The Pulhams aren't too far and places like Alphington, Yelverton, bergh apton and Rockland St Mary are my personal favourites - pricey though, due to proximity to Norwich. Wymondham really is a good bet, and Wroxham. Avoid Thetford though, seriously. And yarmouth/lowestoft.

Rosybear · 28/07/2018 16:42

Thank you, I will look into those 😁

What is Poringland like?

Ballora · 28/07/2018 16:47

My cousin lives in Dereham, 18 miles from Norwich, a nice town. Also look at Swaffham, nice market town.

RatRolyPoly · 28/07/2018 16:57

I like Poringland a lot; it's where I'll be going if I get out of Norwich I reckon. Decent schools too.

FrozenMargarita17 · 28/07/2018 17:48

Hey OP, I'm moving to Norwich too. Maybe we can be Mn mates 👍🏻

Rosybear · 29/07/2018 17:26

What about Fakenham or Cromer?

LunaTrap · 29/07/2018 17:32

Poringland is lovely, has everything you need- primary and secondary schools, library, community centre, supermarket, doctors, chemist, post office, takeaways, pubs, woods and lakes for walks. Plus buses every 15 mins or so straight into the city centre which is only 4 miles away.

Slippery · 29/07/2018 17:36

Cromer is quite touristy, obviously but is relatively cheap to live in. Lovely in the winter too. Sheringham is a bit more upmarket, therefore a bit more expensive for housing.

Aylsham is a small market town between Cromer and Norwich, which is pleasant enough. Nice villages include Buxton, St Faiths, West Runton and Overstrand.

I would avoid North Walsham, Great Yarmouth, and Thetford.

Rosybear · 29/07/2018 17:56

What about Fakenham?

Fakenham once won an award for being the most boring town in the country I think. I think you should go for either Norwich itself or one of the more popular towns/villages. None of Norfolk's schools are brilliant - most are fine but not sparkling iyswim.

Brundall is quite nice, as is Acle as they're both on the river, if that floats your boat (pun intended😁)

Alljamissweet · 21/08/2018 08:46

We're relocating too. We have friends in Fakenham so have been visiting there for years. We're moving there because it has community and our LO won't feel isolated. It has a good selection of supermarkets and is 45 minutes from Norwich if you want proper shopping so that suits us fine. Schools are ok - we currently live in a very high achieving school area and the average kids get forgotten imo so we are hoping this will suit us better.
We can be at Brancaster in 30 minutes and have bought a house twice the size of ours for less with an amazing huge garden.

ShowOfHands · 21/08/2018 08:52

I grew up in Fakenham and currently live in a village between Swaffham and Norwich. I would not want to live in Fakenham or Cromer and commute to Norwich.

What do you want? Town? City? Village? Coast? Certain schooling? Train links? Buses? Size of house? Budget?

naichick · 21/08/2018 08:57

We’re in Bramerton OP. 10 mins from Norwich city centre v peaceful but theres only a bus once an hour and no shop or anything else for that matter!

Roystonv · 21/08/2018 09:03

Not Wroxham area.

Rosybear · 21/08/2018 09:07

We have decided on Wymondham. Found a house and sold our house. Just paperwork that needs to go through.
Thank you all for your advice. 😁

There was a thread on here recently about how awful King’s Lynn is, so not there. I think Holt is very nice but have only holidayed there.

naichick · 21/08/2018 12:07

Good choice OP. Good for commute and schools etc. Wymondham has everything you’d need really. Good luck with the move.

cobwebsinthebelfry · 21/08/2018 12:39

You could try New Buckenham, it's very friendly.

ShadowsInTheDarkness · 21/08/2018 12:47

Yay a Norfolk thread!! We relocated here almost a year ago now and absolutely love it. We are near Acle in the Halvergate marshes villages and find its a brilliant location. Rural and excellent village community, wonderful green spaces all around for the children. 10 mins down the Acle straight for big supermarkets and DIY stores, 25 mins in other direction for Norwich which we love. Right next to the broads. School has been outstanding with my 2 SEN DC.

Could not be happier tbh!
Maybe we need a MN Norfolk meet up??

To echo naichick, Wymondham is a great town. I live just on the outskirts and love it.
Norfolk is a beautiful county and you'll always find something to go and see.
Good luck with the move!
