Sheep question

Wallywobbles · 10/09/2017 19:58

Our 6 sheep have arrived which is very exciting. They were born between November last year and February this year. So my question is does anyone (@Dexra) know if it's ok to get them up the duff this year or if we should wait a year.

They are 3 suffolks and 3 Suffolk x texel.

Thanks

Wait a year, . If you're desperate for lambs you can always get a couple of orphans to bottlefeed in the spring.

Oh Kate damn a day too late. We got our boy yesterday. He's a Suffolk whose 4.5 and very beautiful although the girls were not impressed.

You can always take it out again, 7 months is very young.

Hm, I'd agree with Kate, might think about taking him out again, especially since you've got 3 with Texel in (depends on the lines, but tend to have big heads which can cause problems lambing).

Well they aren't sheep yet (or shearlings as they will be when it is appropriate to tup them) they are still lambs at that age.

Wait a year.

If you are tupping them now I assume you have somewhere to lamb them inside given you are heading for a February lambing? Suffolks don't like the cold... they are pretty soft dopey lambs when they are born.

Suffolks are also very wormy, you might want to check their FECs regularly.

Just to add, any hoggs that we have got in lamb accidentally have never gone on to do well afterwards. Getting them in lamb at that stage in their lives seems to just take something out of them that they can't recover from growth wise.

Definitely wait a year, we will be separating this years lambs out before we put the ram back in
