Hello everyone,
I've posted here before about the situation within the household I'm living in and how unbearable it is. Well since then me and my partner has been discussing leaving and private renting. It'll be the first time we have lived on our own, so I'm just wondering what bills will we have to pay out each month. I know this sounds silly but I know most of them but I want to be fully prepared for what's to come. Any help will be appreciated x

Probably wrong forum, but here goes:

As well as the rent

  • council tax : you can find out what that will be for any property before committing
  • fuel: electricity ,gas if there
  • water
  • contents insurance : not pricy, you can get quotes
  • TV licence : £12 a month
  • broadband and landline : £20 - £25 a month. Add £8 if you want calls
  • mobile phone bills
  • car costs
  • food
  • cleaning stuff
  • clothes, toiletries
  • dentist, optician
  • haircuts/styles
  • other fun

Your rent should not be more than 40% of your income.

The cost of renting in the area I'm living is ridiculous but after many emails, phone calls and meetings with the council the only advice they offered was that it's going to take years on the council list so we should private rent. Oh and that " it's the price to pay for happiness". The rent is going to be at 50% - 60% but it's the only option I have Sad

Be wary of a landlord who will allow that...

I know it isn't that easy, but the long term plan will have to be to move to a cheaper area.

It's just difficult as my partner is duty manager at a local store, if we move too far he can't get a transfer as most places don't have that job available. We might have to look into transport and what areas around are cheaper. Hopefully we will find something. Thank you for the help, I appreciate it x

The very best to you. Smile

Depending on your joint income and age you may be able to get a bit of help towards your rent and council tax so have a look into that too. Private rental costs are expensive compared to housing association homes and mortgages :( - but independance will make it worthwhile :).
