Moving to Devon

I would love to hear from families who know Devon or can give me advise on moving from London to Devon. We have lived in London for 9 years and I have two daughters aged 9 and 12. They go to fantastic schools but I just think the time has come to leave the rush and hectic lifestyle behind. My husband and I both work for ourselves and we have the wonderful advantage of being able to work from anywhere in the world, so work etc not an issue.. what I want is a bit of countryside, outdoor, close to parks, nature and beach with a community and of course good schools for the girls. Would love to hear from other parents... Reading other feeds on here I am thinking Exeter sounds a good choice... I am South African so I don't know Devon that well, and it's mighty big!

Exeter is a lovely city - the perfect mix of living in the gorgeous South West with rolling hills and nearby access to the beach (about a 20-30 minute train ride) but also the convenience of a great high street filled with all the shops and restaurants you could need.

House prices in Exeter are quite expensive (as is the rest of Devon really) but if you're moving from London, you'll already be used to that!

It sounds like a suitable kind of time for you and your children to move to a quieter place, but I still think that there'll be plenty for your family to do - there are some lovely walks, cycle trails (a long route to Exmouth past the nature reserve), a free museum, and an architecturally stunning cathedral. Bristol, Plymouth and Bath are also not too far away by car for day trips, and the city is well connected by the M5 and by rail and Exeter does have its own airport (although it's small)

I tried to have a search online for you as well, as I do know Exeter and surrounding area very well but not all of Devon, and I found this blog post which might help.

Do you have any specific questions about Exeter? I've lived here for three years now and have really enjoyed it.
