Didn't know we were going to get a new topic? Confused

Oooh a new topic to float about in.

I don't actually live rural but used to. Ex-farmer a long time ago.

There are a lot of isolated folk in rural areas so it might be popular.

nannynick · 28/03/2014 21:08

Is there a rural definition? A village with no shops, no post office but does have a pub... wonder if that counts even though a stone throw from the M25.

NoIdeasForUsername · 28/03/2014 21:19

I live in London, so is topic isn't for me. I can't even sleep right without traffic noises Hmm

NoIdeas - although I used to live rural I also lived on the embankment right next to the Tate Gallery right opposite the Henry Moore statue called 'Locking Piece'.

That was noisy and quite different from rural but I know what you mean about traffic noise and sleep. Grin

nannynick that only counts if you wear wellies every day Grin

WestmorlandSausage · 29/03/2014 00:15

I totally asked for this topic

KeatsiePie · 29/03/2014 00:22

Oh, this is nice! Did you really West? Smile

Shall we talk about mud now? That's what rural living is all about for me currently. There's an impressive variety of muds around all of a sudden.

WestmorlandSausage · 29/03/2014 00:29

wet mud
brown mud
shitty mud

?

KeatsiePie · 29/03/2014 00:35

Dark thick deceptively-almost-dry mud
Reddish mud
Medium-brown very slick mud
Mud disguised as dirt clod until stepped slid on
Mud avec straw
Mud avec gravel
Mud avec poo
Poo avec mud
Fossilized poo in mud sugar cage

elastamum · 29/03/2014 00:35

Not a farmer, but have lots of mud, mostly horse shaped. Live opposite a farm and in a week or two will be kept awake at night by the racket made by 200 lambs looking for mum Smile

Can I join in too. Brew

KeatsiePie · 29/03/2014 00:36

Well, not so much mud sugar cage as mud demi-glace I suppose.

WestmorlandSausage · 29/03/2014 00:41

you haven't lived until you have had a lamb that has simultaneously managed to shit through the small torn bit of your waterproof leggings and spit milk out on your (until that point) dry sleeves.

Which brings me on to yellow 'mud' Confused

KeatsiePie · 29/03/2014 00:42

elast I'm not a farmer either, I just live rurally surrounded by farms.

I will sit quietly if the farmers want to talk.

KeatsiePie · 29/03/2014 00:45

Gahhhhh. I'm afraid I laughed out loud at yellow mud, sorry, but it was with sympathy.

Just saw your other thread and am about to go read about lambing. Reminds me of how much I loved James Herriott's books about being a rural vet. Lots of animals being born in terrible terrible weather.

TheTerribleBaroness · 29/03/2014 00:47

Stuff mud. How about tractors? I've spotted a lovely brand new blue one locally.

I have a bakers (closed Mondays), two pubs which sell chips, and a seasonal ice cream parlour. And a cash point!

randomfemale · 29/03/2014 00:56

Can I join. I don't own any sheep but live next to a river in a village with no pub/shop/anything lots of horses crapping on the lane, lots of sheep and cows in fields about here. Everyone has a gun/gun dog (s) and a shiny 4x4. We have an Aga. I have hunter willies, barbour willies, toggies and a LABRADOR. That MUST get me permission. Yes??

randomfemale · 29/03/2014 00:58

Fuck - sorry. Hunter Wellies et al. DH has been working away from home too long methinks Hmm

FayeKorgasm · 29/03/2014 01:04

I'm in! I live in a rural village that fits nannynick's criteria.

I don't wear wellies - too many blisters, just old, muddy country boots.
I'm not a farmer.

I was a city girl and although I love going back to London regularly, I prefer where I am now. The huge sky - especially at night as we don't get much light pollution, the relative quiet - wildlife can be v noisy - and the wonderful neighbours who are now friends. (Oh god, I'm quoting the neighbours theme tune)

I do miss some of the conveniences from my previous home, but I have adapted. We are at the final stage of renovating our home and plan to live here for a v long time.

froginthepond · 29/03/2014 20:49

Im really happy to see a rural section. I have posted before about feeling isolated and struggling to make friends, rural villages can be very hard places to integrate into. I volunteer for a charity and a lot of the families that seek support are struggling with rural isolation. Sad Summers are fab, long scottish winters are hard though, im so excited for spring! Smile

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 29/03/2014 20:52

Checking in!
Farmer's girl at heart, now living in very rural Northumberland in a little farm cottage with two kitties.
Never been happier in my life
