Ways to make extra money in retirement without a regular job

LancashireButterPie · 13/06/2026 10:42

I retired last Christmas and whilst we aren't starving yet! We have definitely noticed a difference financially.
For various reasons and family ties, I don't want the commitment of a regular job.
How are others making pocket money for holidays etc? I've thought of vinted and "flipping" charity shop buys but is this effective?

Exam invigilation. Ad hoc, especially if you can invigilate for professional exams as well as the usual school cycles

Dearover · 13/06/2026 10:45

Traffic surveys if your bladder can cope with sitting in a car for long stretches

Did you plan financially for retirement looking at current and future spending? Why are you suddenly noticing a difference?

Holdonforsummer · 13/06/2026 10:56

pet sitting?

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 13/06/2026 12:12

I invigilate at the school i left. Its ok if you can hack the boredom(I cover special arrangements, which often means kids who struggle so its not unknown for them to do about half an hour then head down), it also means you're booked up from mid April to mid June, and then mocks, sometimes doing a morning. But a retired friend also does it and she does as much as she can, apart from pensions it's the income that covers emergencies, little breaks and the odd night out.

Would you be open to hosting students it renting a room out . You need to be able to cope with sharing space .

For ex teachers and lecturers you can make $$$ online tutoring.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 13/06/2026 15:34

What are your hobbies? Can you do a paid version of those? Eg There is always demand for reliable gardeners who know a weed from a precious seedling.

Our local theatre is often recruiting for people to cover the theatre evenings and weekends.

Santa Claus, voters roll, exam invigilating, election polling station or vote counter, baby/child/cat/dog sitting for neighbours, handyman service (putting up shelves, painting etc), grass/hedge cutting, care home/hospital bank work, music teacher, artist, tutor of specialist subject.

I knew someone who worked quite a bit as a chaperone for children who had transport to school. I assumed it was a council job.

Giggorata · 13/06/2026 15:58

Or driving patients to hospital, prescription delivering, delivering speed seminars, conducting weddings as a casual registrar?

Sesquioxides · 13/06/2026 16:01

Lollipop lady?

7238SM · 13/06/2026 16:04

What did you do before? What is your experience/profession? There might be options using your skills which aren't full time.

GOODCAT · 13/06/2026 20:03

Royal Mail or delivery work in the lead up to Christmas? You could also try a temping agency and get short runs of work when you want it. Various job sites also target retirees for roles, try indeed flex as an example, but there are a number.

Somersetbaker · 13/06/2026 21:21

The usual answer here is "take in ironing". You are very unlikely to make any money buying from charity shops and then selling on, for anything worth more than a couple of quid the shop will have already checked vinted/ebay/market place/abebooks/musicmagpie to find the going rate, add in packing and postage, the cost of handling returns and you'll be losing money not making it.

Learningdutch · 13/06/2026 21:26

Election poll clerking or vote counting.

herbetta · 13/06/2026 21:27

Use an employment agency for temp work.

LancashireButterPie · 13/06/2026 22:25

Thanks everyone.

Sign up for a temp agency. I do occasional PA work, bookings for sports events etc

oliviaAustin · 13/06/2026 23:13

Or Uber. If you drive.
