Hi does anyone know about returning to work after having taken ill health retirement? I've seen some things state you cant work at the same role but im unsure exactly what that means. For example if you worked as a research assistant at a university are you able to return to being a research assistant? Thanks

do You mean you got an ill health retirement pension? If so - it will depend on the terms of that particular pension

Thanks for getting back to me :) I haven't taken it yet but I'm applying and wanted to factor this in. With USS.

I took ill health retirement from teaching, but the terms were clear that I could do other work but NOT teaching.

What did your terms say when you retired?

With the USS if you get any job after being granted either of the tires of ill health retirement you have to let them know for a reassessment of the pension you'd now be eligible for.

A research assistant to research assistant example like in your OP would look like you're fit enough to return and likely mean you'd no longer be eligible for ill health pension benefits.

I’ll health retirement is normally only granted on the basis that you won’t be fit for work again

Surely if you are retired on health grounds it's because due to your health you can no longer fulfill the role ?
Therefore you can't retire on health grounds and then go back to the same job.
In my sector you would need supporting evidence from Consultant /OH etc stating why you cannot do the job due to xyz health condition.

I'm a bit Confused that you are asking this

Thanks for the responses. I understand what ill health retirement means and have the appropriate supporting evidence. It's just in case anything were to improve in my future years which means I could return to work. There has been other cases of people returning to work after ill health retirement.

It depends on the rules of IHR. My council has 3 tiers for ILH. Tier 1; you are not fit for ANY work in the future and you take full pension. Then tiers 2 and 3, are where you are fit for work within the next 18 months to 3 years and you take a percentage of your pension.
