I'm a primary teacher and I'm retiring next July after 29 years in education. I'll only be 56 so I'm going to get a part time job to boost my pension and give me some structure until I'm 60 and my DP retires.

I've just done a quiz that the National Careers Service runs and guess what the top job is I'd be great at? .......Education and teaching🥴 mmmm don't think so.

Election work good but they ask same ones back to polling stations. Would you temp I chose my own roles and they usually monday to friday. Sometimes she rang with very junior stuff so I got more picky ha.

Casual museum or heritage site learning contracts? Depending if you have some near you of course. - I'm in London.

I've been a museum learning volunteer for some years and am about to start a paid casual learning role role in a different museum. Many of the casual staff I've worked alongside are ex-teachers, and have casual zero hours contracts with several museums, singing up for shifts that suit them. If you focus on school groups the shifts are all weekdays and their teachers are with them the whole time.

Would you be interested in being a healthcare coordinator for a healthcare startup? Work from home position.

Could you get an admin job?

A teacher in my current school retired in July after 35 years service. They are 57, and they start back on Monday after a term away working part time as an Attendance & Clerical Officer - 8.30-4pm, 4 days a week.

menopausalmare · 05/01/2025 16:30

How about a National Trust guide? A colleague guided at the V&A museum.

Having finished the mock exams season at my local school I have decided going forward it is not worth it. I am paid a little over the NMW. If I am given a shift it may 8.30 to 11 or 11-12.30 or 1.30 to 3.30.

We are no longer allowed access to the staff room to make a cup of tea! I had 8 hours over 2.5 weeks. The pool of invigilators is so large and with school budgets being squeezed they are squeezing setting up and tidying up time with the exams officer & other staff helping there.

Fatbottomgardener · 17/06/2025 16:02

Just heard from one of my invigilator friends at the school I was at that going forward the school will no longer pay for the time taken to complete the annual safeguarding training along with KCSIE. Talk about nitpicking. It’s about 2 hours but it’s the principal of the matter.

WanderingWisteria · 17/06/2025 16:20

If you can, perhaps have 6 months off to recharge and have a think about what you want to do with your time.
I know you say you want nothing to do with teaching but private tutoring does pay well, around £45ph around us for secondary school level. You’d have to do 4 hours of a minimum wage job to earn a similar amount (although that job would come with benefits). I’m in a similar position and am realising it might be better for me to do a few hours using my qualification and then do some voluntary work too. The sort of voluntary work I am considering allows you to sign up on ad hoc basis rather than have a fixed routine so I can also dip in & out of it as otherwise crop up.

BG2015 · 17/06/2025 19:18

I'd got an interview lined up for speed awareness training but I've heard today that they have recruited everyone they need for the time being. I was really hoping to get this at its very flexible but until they recruit again I need to find something else.

Considered tutoring but I'm really EYFS/KS1 (up to Y3/4 at a push) and I don't want to work evenings at all, so unless I get something in the day. Plus I want some flexibility as I don't want to be tied.

Im seriously thinking of supply. Choose my days and year groups and see what happens. I did it years ago and it was ok. I've got 29 years of education experience and 5 years of nursery experience .

Try searching Indeed for retired people jobs. It may give you an idea of the sort of jobs that are available and may give you some inspiration.

I’ve got a job this morning!
Im going to be a speed awareness online trainer - very flexible. It’s a self employed role and if I work it right along with my pension I could earn what I’m on now
