I have a civil service pension. Am I entitled to 25% tax free when I turn 55. Google searches turn up conflicting advice.

Don't use Google - you need to check the actual, official documents for the specific scheme you are in. There are multiple versions of the civil service pension.

I suggest contacting Pensionwise and they will give you all the pros and cons of this.

It's probably not advisable unless you've stopped work and want to draw on your pension proceeds now.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 07/05/2024 12:24

Pensionwise doesn't deal with defined benefit pensions like the civil service one.

Speak to an ifa

ChessieFL · 07/05/2024 12:29

Probably yes, but it would be reduced for being paid early. Contact Civil Service Pensions for help.

How old are you? When do you turn 55? The normal minimum pension age is changing from 55 to 57 in 2028 which is why you might be reading different things. But as PP have said, the only way to get the correct answer is contacting the pension scheme.

Kitkat1523 · 07/05/2024 12:37

Likely you will get a reduced pension if you are retiring at 55

HappyHolidai · 07/05/2024 12:38

All the Civil Service pension scheme rules are here. You do need to know which section(s) you are in. Not all of them have a lump sum.

Thank you for the advice. I'm with Northern Ireland Civil Service and getting in contact with them is proving difficult. They don't seem to reply to emails.

The policy documents will all be on the website, and you should know - or be able to work out - which section you are in based on your date of joining. You don't need to ccntact them, but you do need to use specific official sources rather than guess based on Google (or mumsnet). Especially for Notherern Ireland, because most info you find elsewhere will be for England.

If you're still confused once you've checked those details, join the Pengage public sector pensions Facebook group - that's a financial advice company specialising in public sector pensions. Their FAQ documents and free webinars should answer your questions.

Mia85 · 07/05/2024 16:20

Does the scheme not have a website that allows you to log in and see your pension information? At the very least you should be getting an annual statement and that should give you the starting point for understanding your situation.

PickledPurplePickle · 07/05/2024 16:31

Depends on what year you were born

Depends on what year you were born

This is the sort of thing I mean. It is (part of) a useful answer for someone with an entirely different type of penion - a defined contribution one.

For someone with a defined benefit civil service pension it will depend on a lot of things, and date of birth may or may not be one of them depending what section you're in. Asking on here will only make you more confused.

Scrumbleton · 07/05/2024 20:29

yes you can take your pension with
a 25% lump sum tax free at 55 but it will be actuarially reduced for each year that it is taken early
