HI Folks

The plan is to retire in March 2024 from a managerial role and I am looking at jobs in Tesco on the premise of two shifts a week , non managerial. This is for holiday/pocket money

Anyone got any input or thoughts on this having done this

Thanks

Do it.
Might just be my store (although get the impression as management swap store quite a bit) but it’s very chilled and anyone with a good work ethic is left alone to get on.
They have a huge range of people working for them from bright Uni students to second jobbers to those with physical or mental conditions. As a result it’s very inclusive and less cliquy than other places I’ve worked.
You get proper breaks, free drinks and food at break times and a 10% discount. Plus there’s usually free food floating about for colleagues depending on the time of day.
I don’t work on the tills so I can tick the box for being activity enough in a week!

Meant to ask, do you get enhanced for nights/weekends

No you don’t although it’s worth working Mondays as you get all the bank holidays which are paid extra. We got paid loads extra for the Kings Coronation though.

I don’t really think of the weekends as weekends though. Largely irrelevant when the store is staffed from 5am to midnight everyday . They tell you what they need and then there’s an app you can see what other shifts are available to pick up. My hours are very civilised and still give me mornings to lie in and Sat/ Sun evenings off

You get holiday pay and an extra “personal day” you can take when you like. I have a “professional” job during the week and my Tesco shifts are just extra. Was supposed to be just a Christmas temp but I liked it enough to carry on.

Give it a whirl but be prepared to be disappointed.
I did this when I retired as I felt it would be nice to do a couple of shifts to keep some structure to my week, meet new people and earn some pocket money.
The work was much harder than I expected with horrible shifts, relentless lifting, no support from an invisible manager and all for a 25%/HR of what I used to earn.
Turns out staff turnover in PT roles was very high and I can completely understand why.
After a while I embraced retirement and haven't been happier.

Deftandglory · 02/09/2023 01:22

🙂@Cotswoldbee Yes it us that too. I quite like being left alone by the management and the lifting ( l count that as exercise).

The other positive is that you only have to give a weeks notice. You hate it, you leave. They do have a high turnover but that’s the nature of flexible part time work. Lots of part timers are kids so they often do part time, then a gap year and then come back for summer holidays whilst at Uni. Other people use it as a stop gap. Others have been there years and years. It’s not really the same as a career type job. I think it’s easier than waitressing or bar work though.

I too have thought about this. My step- daughter works for them, she's studying at Uni down in Brighton but has been working at one of our local Tescos during the holidays.

My friends son also works as a Tesco delivery driver whilst he's been at Uni. He's going travelling now but he earned more doing that than his mum earned working as a TA.

I've also thought about admin jobs with the NHS.

Jellylover · 02/09/2023 08:45

I took up an NHS admin job when I retired. Two days a week, great colleagues and I love it. Just gives me a bit of structure to my week and the money is very handy.

I'm currently teaching but I'm sure I have transferable skills to do this!

What's the pay like? Will it pay for my weekly shop?

Floofydawg · 02/09/2023 11:27

I've thought about this as well but prefer the idea of M&S food hall for the discounts.

Pushkinini · 02/09/2023 11:34

DM worked at Tesco on the checkouts from 57 until she was 80, retiring last year. It supplemented her state pension and a meagre pension that my late DF left. She enjoyed it as she got to chat with people and it got her out of the house. It didn't require her to think about work as soon as she left the shop either. If you just want to earn a few quid and don't mind boring work, then it's probably ok.

Jellylover · 05/09/2023 22:11

BG2015 - I get £11.45 per hour. I’m an ex School Business Manager so it was an easy transition for me. If you have reasonable IT skills, which I guess you do, you’d be absolutely fine. No evening or weekend work which suits me too.

Unfortunately no marks and Spencer near me

I know someone who worked very part time for Argos/Sainsbury as a delivery driver. Whatever the minimum that was allowed to give access to discounts etc.

Worked well although he was always being nagged to do more. He sometimes did as he felt guilty always saying no, not because he wanted to.

It might have been a pain getting holiday the same time as his wife, especially Christmas when they are rushed off their feet, but his wife was still working and they rarely go away so it didn't matter to him.

Heartbreaktuna · 10/09/2023 15:16

I worked in Asda after going back to uni as a mature post graduate. Best job I've ever had! So much flexibility. All staff had to work a minimum of one weekend shift (4 hrs) though. I think most supermarkets are the same.

Ragwort · 10/09/2023 15:22

It's not always as easy as you might think to get part time jobs like this, it sounds ideal & I wish you luck but the recruitment process can still be very daunting. We keep hearing that there are plenty of p/t jobs around but people I know who are looking just don't have much luck ... and many recruiters don't even acknowledge applications.

good96 · 15/09/2023 10:05

I know a lot of retirees who have gone on to work for supermarkets after retirement to top their income up. You just got to be careful with tax with your pension too.
B&Q like to recruit older people too so that is an option.

I'd recommend Matalan. I currently work part time in an office and also an 8 hour contract at Matalan on the recovery shift - basically tidying the clothes on display. We go in 3 hours before closing and 1 hour after - so a weekday shift is 5-9. You get given an area, eg half of women's, home, boys clothes etc, and you tidy and put back in size order. I actually find it quite relaxing - no phone and just pottering around folding clothes and generally tidying. I only work 2 nights but for me it means I can finish my office job at 3, take my son to his after school activity and then go to work. They employ almost all their staff on 8 hour contracts so always looking for people at out local one. I think it is largely down to the managers though and I really like ours but I'd definitely consider them. There are also other jobs on an 8 hour contract within matalan but I tend to always do recovery as the hours of that suit me. Obviously people work weekends too on this but I just tend to do week days as don't like being tied at weekends.
