moving city before retirement - your experiences?

Hi all

I'm late 50s, single mum of young adults, looking ahead in retirement planning. Currently based on edge of a city which landed up in for work 10 years ago. It is fine, and now home, but not where I ever intended to be, and a long way from my elderly mum, who would welcome more support than I can give. On the other hand it has good employment options for my young adults, who can't afford to live independently yet. My mum lives in my childhood city, somewhat cheaper, close to lovely coast, has hospital and enough going on - feels a good place to move to and free up some cash - but I know no one else there now (though I'm ok with getting involved in new groups etc).

What have your experiences been on relocating before or during retirement? Currently work hybrid so am wondering whether might move in a few years time, while still at work (but likely to involve commute at least once a month for in office days). Or moving on retirement (which might mean I'm more isolated and lots of changes all at once). What worked for you? Thanks for your thoughts and experiences

Always intended to move after we had retired but during lockdown my company announced a relocation so we moved house but after 6-months I decided I didn't like the new commute to took early retirement anyway.
Worked for us, work were very accomodating during the process so there was no difficulty on that score.

Moving before retirement makes sense, you can start to build a new life whilst still having the familiarity of work. If it really is a once a month work in the office then you can manage the commute, possibly tacked onto a weekend so you can visit DC ( assuming they stay in your current city).
