Billions in unclaimed pensions

IABU in thinking that all companies that manage private pensions hold the national insurance number of each member and could get in touch with the beneficiary via HMRC who will know the address or most recent employer for everyone? My mother may have unclaimed pensions but isn't sure about this but why does it rely on the individual to trace old pensions? I've heard about a pension dashboard but don't know if this will resolve this or not...

I agree with you

some do my dh for a letter from hmrc saying a pension company had asked them to trace him to his new address from his ni number

Is that true...?

I would think so. If you submit a self assessment they will know your address. For your tax code they will know who your latest employer is I would think. I know that may not identify 100% of people but I would think it would identify almost all.

Most retired ppl don't submit self-assessment.

Fair point. Although a lot will claim state pension and will probably have their address registered with the DWP...?

Why, unless they are getting post from them? I pretty sure the DWP have no idea what my address is

Surely it is up to the individual person to update change of address details with the DWP and that is done via the Gov Gateway portal?

Don't get me started about self assessment.
My late dad had to submit SA most of his retired life due to multiple pensions, investments etc.
I retire in a few weeks (57) and have only ever done SA twice in my lifetime but being in a similar position as my dad I would not be surprised if SA became a thing for me as well?
