What age do you think you will retire by?

I am close to 30 and I have read reports during my time retirement age could easily reach 75. Currently have no savings, investments or pension contributions due to needing money for unexpected circumstances. Gaining experience in the public sector now it things go well and I can progress hopefully a better salary in the next few years which should help me save more and invest my money. Realistically the latest I would like to stop working full time is by 60-65. I do not mind working part time after 65. However that depends how much I can save, salary progression etc..

When do you think you can realistically fully retire by or work part time only?

With my 6 children and stepchildren - I don't think I want to live until retirement. Life gets darker every day.

FluffyPJs · 18/02/2023 18:16

Someone said recently that soon there won't be retirement, we will just keep working til we die. Such a depressing thought

Oblomov23 · 18/02/2023 18:17

I fear there won't be retirement, no state pension by the time I get there.

xJoy · 18/02/2023 18:23

Sadly not til 67
I won't get my state pension until then, I am contributing in to another pension which will top up the €14k pension by about another 4k per annum.
So if I retired before then not sure what I'd live on as a single person. Kind of envy friends with older richer husbands ha ha! not normally I wouldn't be envying them but when I think about another 16 years of this, omg.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 18/02/2023 18:24

Sadly 67, I’m 52 now and knackered

flowerycurtain · 18/02/2023 18:24

Never. I'm a farmer. 93 year old granny still earns her keep cooking scones. 84 year old father in law still fixes things and helps out when stuck. 74 year old father still working full time.

I'd like a few more holidays once I hit 65 but other than that fully expect to be earning my keep at 93!!!

ha ha snap, and I need to walk the camino when I retire! why is retirement so far away! I really envy the generation who retired at 60, it hardly seems possible now. So jealous.

RudsyFarmer · 18/02/2023 18:27

I suspect it will be around 75 for me. Maybe 65 for DP.

MajorCarolDanvers · 18/02/2023 18:28

Hope to go part-time at 60 and only work for half of the year. Then retire fully from paid employment about 65.

Hope to carry in with voluntary work much longer though.

GoodChat · 18/02/2023 18:29

I'd be disappointed if I'm still working after 55 but we'll see how life plays out.

Squirrelsnut · 18/02/2023 18:33

60 to 65. I'm 52 now.

woodhill · 18/02/2023 18:34

Yes around 60

Secretboringsister · 18/02/2023 18:35

hindsight being everything, if I could live my life over I would have saved like crazy to have early retirement by 50. I’m over that now and have recently luckily been blessed with a new job after a redundancy. However it took 11 months to get a job, hundreds of CV, many interviews and unbelievable amounts of stress and worry for that 11 months. I agree people should work a bit longer but companies have to be somehow compelled to consider/hire us over 50’s who are able to work and qualified for the role .

so all that being said I will hope that I am able to have gainful employment until age 62 and then work part time.
xx

Tiddlywinkly · 18/02/2023 18:41

I've paid AVC on top of my usual pension contributions since 25. I'm 40 this year. I'm aiming to retire at 60 like my parents. Observing their health at 70 has made me determined to achieve this.

ItchyBillco · 18/02/2023 18:45

The plan is 40 but I don’t think I will ever stop doing something. My grandfather always warned against stopping some sort of work. My work is also my pastime, and I suspect I will never stop.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/02/2023 18:50

Late 60s if not later. I’m 58 and have already been working nearly 43 years. I’m shattered.

Scottishflower65 · 18/02/2023 18:50

58 - so this year.

UserNameSameGame · 18/02/2023 18:51

I’d like to be able to stop the job I currently do by 57 (I am 50 this year). It’s high stress and very long hours. Full of “live to work” people.

I would then hope to work a mid level job for another 5 years, to 62, then semi-retire for another 5.

I’ve been pumping money into pensions since I started work, but confess I can’t really work out how much I need to save and by when.

shinynewapple22 · 18/02/2023 18:54

I'm late 50s and currently work part time . I plan to retire in a couple of years.

Tapenade · 18/02/2023 18:55

Hoping to be able to go part time at 60 and then carry on as long with decreasing hours until I want to or have to stop. May not be in quite the same job, though, and I might take on interim contracts if they’re still in demand then.

Abouttimemum · 18/02/2023 18:59

I went part-time when DS was born, will go back full time when he goes to school (with flexible hours though) so that we can save like crazy and I can go back to Part time at 55ish hopefully and retire by 65. Got a fair bit of saving to do and this also depends on actually receiving a state pension!

SeasonsBleatings · 18/02/2023 19:00

Aiming for 59. My work pension will be hugely reduced by early retirement but I'm paying extra so it's do-able.

FrownedUpon · 18/02/2023 19:00

58, I’ve been saving extra into my pension & overpaying the mortgage so I can retire early.

Ragwort · 18/02/2023 19:02

I could retire next year when I am 66 ... however the nearer I get I am questioning whether I want to retire. I already only work part time in a job that I love which is fairly flexible in terms of the days/hours I work.

I already do a lot of voluntary work plus caring for my elderly DM so I imagine life after retiring will be much of the same .. DH is already retired and to be honest I have no burning desire to spend more time with him Blush or go travelling etc. I had a long break as a SAHM so I don't feel exhausted by work, only a five minute commute (or 20 minute walk) ... I will reserve judgement and make my decision nearer my 66th birthday. Financially it won't make much difference as my part time wages are only slightly more than my state pension will be.
