Has anyone travelled worldwide on the cheap in retirement?

Me and DH will be retiring this year I'm early fifties he's early sixties but very young in outlook. We are downsizing and both have decent pensions (not massive ones) and we would like to go travelling (worldwide). Envisage spending perhaps 9 months a year overseas if we can. Not cruises, hotels or organised packages, more independent / air bnb / camper van hire. We don't mind roughing it a bit. Has anyone done / currently doing anything similar? Have you managed it relatively cheaply? To put it in perspective we're expecting to have around 2.5k between us per month to spend after everything is paid at home. Any suggested blogs or websites? Thanks

Have you travelled to Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Bali ?

Although it costs for flights & visa
Once you are there, you can book accommodation very cheaply. Food is also very reasonable.
For transport, you can hire a moped, use public transport or hire a taxi guide for the day, or go on tours
Look on Booking.com for prices

Australia & New Zealand is much more expensive

Look at Philippines too

Check out workaway.

We have hosted several people over the years. Last couple came for 1 month for look after our cats whilst we were away. We have separate apartment on site so they have own space

Camper van New Zealand, but check prices

Thanks for the ideas.
@Creeping5Vin love that part of the world. Haven't considered the Philippines, it does look fantastic though.
@Caspianberg my children have done Workaways but I thought it was purely for young people, hostel and bar work etc. I'm going to take a look - great idea thanks

@sandalsinthebin - not at all. You will just need to filter. But all of our guests the last few years have either been families ( 2 adults in 40s with 2 children under 5), or couples in 50/60s.
We generally ask for cat sitting, and house sitting so some general garden bits usually like mow lawn, leaves in autumn, or help planting up balconies in spring.
In exchange a free 2 bedroom apartment in nice area ( lake and mountains).
Many guests leave ours to head to the next country to similar. Some mix up with workaways for 1-3 months, then air B and B in cheaper countries etc. Some hosts want just someone to speak English with for example

When I travel I use Homestay. Living with local people in the area I'm visiting. Much more enjoyable as to get to be immersed in the local culture and the family cn give you tips to get around.
