What Are You Hoping To Do In Retirement?

Ok, there will be financial constraints, some really serious ones for some of us. But, what are you hoping for and what is realistic when you give up work?
A lot of people work well beyond retirement age now for a better lifestyle or for essentials. How do you see yours panning out? Off at 60? 65? Beyond?
Do you have a passion that you soooooo want to follow in retirement? Can you afford to do it?
Love to know what others think and want.

i love eating so now i shop almost every day chiding what to cook !!Before it was sticking to meal plans and having to have that salmon whether i wanted it or not!!!
But I do feel a bit useless if i'm honest !
Volunteering could be good !

Finally, finally, finally, get me a dog! It's been a long hard road as a single working parent. I had neither the time or money to have the rescue I longed for. I retire in the next 1 to 5 years, depending on how long I can hang on in there. Then I intend to walk the legs off my little doggy and explore the UK.😄

I want to do a load of travelling abroad, maybe live aborad for a year or two then get a dog and do a lot of walking and exploring UK.
And I quite fancy doing some woo things. Hippyish retreats and dancing. I'd love to become one of those wise old earth mother types who makes soup and cares for injured animals.

I've only recently retired and still don't know what to do with my time. I'm not a very sociable person so I'm not keen to join groups or clubs and don't want to commit myself that meets regularly. At the moment I'm enjoying reading and cleaning the house - I know that sounds tragic but it's the fact that I can do it any time that I like!

Contact your local secondary schools and ask about invigilation work. We've had the same team of retired folk for ages. They are invaluable and they can pick and choose which exams they want to come in for. We do year 11 and 13 mocks with invigilators as well as external exams.

I do invigilating. We are starting the mock exams in October, there’s as much or as little work as you want most of the year.

This popped up in my TIO. I posted on it in 2015!
This was my post under an old name.
I've just retired at 57 although I haven't worked full time since, DC. DH retired 8 years ago. DC 2 still at school.
We are financially secure, but I have some recent but permanent health problems which none of you have mentioned.
I don't know what to do.
Need something to interest me and fill my time. Not voluntary work either. Been there and done that.

So since then DC have grown up, gone to uni, bounced back, left again bounced back again and now probably left for good. No granchildren in the pipeline. I was 40 when I I had DC2 so I may have a long wait.
I'm 64 now and had more health problems including breast cancer three years ago.
I exercise more and have cultivated a few hobbies. I have always found it hard to make friends and DH is a hermit.
We have been talking about moving. I don't want to leave my lovely big house and garden but it's in a tiny hamlet with no public transport or shop. DH is now 72 and I don't want to be left here once we are elderly and can't drive everywhere. Not downsizing though. We hope to find a similar house with a slightly smaller garden in a small market town or large village.

@Fex. I was wondering how people's plans had turned out and its probably health reasons that stop people from doing more than they had planned to.

lazybiatcrh · 17/11/2022 23:14

i stopped work in january.
my husband tops my pension up to what i was earining
so financially i'm the same and initially i was elated.
now i feel terrible- feel indebted to husband although he doesn't try to make me feel like that.
i feel a huge responsibility to have the house spotless washing ironing although i think a bit that's my expectation of myself
So i honestly have done zero except get fatter and waste time

It would be nice no rushing back to offices after lunch. My friend is retired but found extra childcare was presumed.. so I think boundaries important with family. I have a dog so they a good outlet for parks etc. Im not at this stage but good to get tips from replies. Are people doing hobbies more?

I'm 54, been teaching fulltime for 26 years apart from two, 6 month maternity leaves. Currently over paying my mortgage so that I can retire in the next 3-4 years. I had breast cancer last year and have lost a lot of passion for my job since then (plus being messed about a bit with my role). Being off sick for 9 months, plus lockdowns has made me realise I'm quite happy at home pottering about.

DP may have to work a bit longer but we're looking forward to cheaper holidays out of school holidays to start with.

I'm not adverse to doing a bit of part time work but I'm looking forward to reading more, walking, swimming and hopefully looking after some grandchildren. I'd like to volunteer at my old school too.

May need to downsize to release some equity but hoping to stay put for as long as we can.
