My friend lives in Ireland and after 6 unhappy years she wants a divorce. They have a 5year old sun, her husband is from Malaysia.

I need any information anyone has please, from how long it should take to everything about custody and maintenance.
If anyone has some experience that wouldn't mind to share a would really appreciate that.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure it takes a long time to get a divorce here - four years IIRC.

Don't know a huge amount but I know it is not a quick process. You cannot get a divorce until you have been separated for 4 years (and I suspect that may mean legally separated rather than just living apart). Obviously maintenance and custody can be sorted out before the final divorce.

I think your friend needs to apply for legal separation as soon as possible - can she afford a solicitor? I don't know if free legal aid is available in Ireland?

I don't think she could afford a solicitor, but thank you for letting me know about legal separation.

Your friend could contact the local Citizens Information Service which operate throughout the Republic of Ireland. She may be eligible for legal aid and if she is eligible on financial grounds, it should cover her for help with separation, divorce and custody arrangements

Not sure how to link this, but the address is below:-

Is she domiciled in Ireland? If she's just there for a few years for work but remains domiciled in England or Wales she may be able to get divorced in E&W.

She is domiciled, loves2walk thank you for the link.
