Copper Coil - is this wrong? (TMI alert)

Hi - I had a copper coil fitted about 7 weeks ago and since then... well, sorry if TMI but things 'down there' have not smelt normal and I am wondering if anyone else had similar?

It's not a fishy or completely evil-knock-you-out smell, as people describe infections - more like the smell you get right at the end of a period when there's a bit of blood but not enough even to wear a pad. Anyone else had this, and when does it go? In all other respects the coil is doing its job nicely - but I just can't bear the slight 'old blood' odour much longer and am becoming self conscious about it with dp. It's fast becoming good contraception - but not in the way it was designed to .

I had one for years, and TBH, I never had what you describe. I would def go down to the Gp and get it checked out. You DONT want a uterine infection!!

I had a copper coil for 5 years & I had what you describe for the entire time I wore panty liners which helped greatly. I tried the scented ones first, which worked slightly better than unscented but unfortunately caused cystitis. Apart from that my periods were heavier & more painful but I kept it for convenience sake.

Just this week I had the Mirena coil removed after 7 months as I've piled weight on. Apart from that, though, the Mirena worked very well & I had less discharge than normal & extremely light to no periods at all. I'm also sorry if that's TMI but HTH

Coils do make you more prone to infections like thrush and BV. Are you actually bleeding or is it just a bit of a pong?

If there's no blood it's probably a mild case of BV which is very common in women without coils and even more so in women with.

There are various natural remedies or a course of antibiotics from your GP.

Do you have a specific sexual health/family planning nurse at your doctors? If so make an appointment with her and get checked out alternatively with your Doc, don't worry about wasting anyones time, you know your body and if it's not right you need it sorted.

Couldn't you put this thread into HEALTH ??

Nothing to do with Relationship per se.

purplepeony · 23/05/2010 12:11

you'll get more response on the General Health forum.

Sorry! Didn't mean to invade, but this is usually a very busy forum and there was a discussion a while ago about coppers vs Mirenas. Should I have it deleted?

why get it deleted? i have coil and haven't had what you describe so would go to the doctors just to get it checked out.
