Shopping Bills

Long story, but dh and I are having to make cut backs in our monthly expenditure. We realised that I was spending far too much while shopping, because I make several trips to various supermarkets, and get a few extra things that can sometimes add up to £30 a time, on top of the weekly shop. OK, so we decided to stop having take-aways at the weekend, going out for pizza, and for me to make only one visit to the supermarket, unless I need milk or bread (and then I must only buy those items). No problem there, and last week, I managed to spend 'only' £75 in two trips (one for milk only!) However, today I went for the weekly shop, and managed to spend £110. Before you all gasp in horror, I have ds's 2nd birthday party next Monday, and a lot of the shop involved fizzy drinks, wine, squash etc. Also, there were a lot of toiletries involved this week. In addition, wherever possible, I bought BOGOF items and 'two for £xxx' offers.

mummysurfer, usually prosecco has a champagne type arrangement in the cork department, but i agree, lidl prosecco corks are too far in, so i just used a corkscrew on it and it was fine

Chinchilla · 15/07/2003 23:03

Or you could just drill a hole through the cork, and use a straw

Necessity or desperation?!

MABS · 16/07/2003 08:10

Ok - you've got me...how much is this wonderful sparkiling wine then?? I'll be passing a Lidl this afternoon and may just have to pop in. Do they take credit cards or do i have to drag myself to a cashpoint too??

Boe · 16/07/2003 08:43

jto - my nearest lidl is apparently in Footscray - I have never been to Footscray and have been warned that the word Cray means stay away but am working myself up to go and visit in Sunday.

Cannot wait - although am joining Slimming World tonight so will not be able to take advantage of scrummy wine & cake I have heard so much about!!

lou33 · 16/07/2003 09:07

Mabs I think Spacemonkey said it was 2.99. They don't take credit cards , but I think they take switch and delta. Don't hold me to that though. Don't forget your carrier bags!

jasper · 16/07/2003 10:21

yes they do take switch

jasper · 16/07/2003 10:21

Go on Mabs, get the marble cake too

Sonnet · 16/07/2003 10:43

Thanks Guys!!!....Inspired by your postings I searched for a lidel - to no avail, but I do have a Netto and guess what: 12 cans of Boddingtons for £5.99, 4 bottles of Lindlemans wine for £2.99, 5 cans of Tango for 99p, a food processor for £19.99...I could go on and on...
Know where I'm going to tomorow!!

Boe · 16/07/2003 11:42

OOOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - bargain bought a B&D in car hoover thing (like a dirtdevil) at the weekend - made hoovering the car out a lot easier, just plugged into ciggie lighter and whoom whoom whoom (apparently that it the noise a hoover makes as told by DD) clean car.

Feel very chuffed as car is always like a bit of dustbin and now is all sparkly (even had like an upholstery brush thing to 'bring back the pile' and all for the bargain price of £19.99 in Safeway - thought could be good present for sad men who like cleaning out cars!!

Boe · 16/07/2003 11:43

Bloody smiley face thing - did not mean to do that one and when I try I can't do one - ure it is male!!!

ThomCat · 16/07/2003 13:05

When my flight to Prague got cancelled I nearly went to Lidel to cheer myself up and pretend I was in Prague!
(do any of you have aclue what I'm talking about?!)

lou33 · 16/07/2003 17:46

Not a clue TC but it sounds very interesting, do tell!

SamboM · 16/07/2003 17:47

I guess that supermarkets in Prague are not up to Waitrose standards Thomcat...

helenmc · 16/07/2003 21:20

is it full of cheques ???(czechs)

runragged · 16/07/2003 21:56

Do you know, I think I am being done! Things are really tight but I get £60 per week for food and "myself" (which is usually things for the children! :0) and every now and again I have to splurge on the bills account because I can't keep up. I've been thinking that I'm not budgeting properly but now I think I'm doing okay!!

judetheobscure · 16/07/2003 22:02

You're working miracles, runragged.

Lidl in Footscray? It's probably opposite the Tesco's? Thanks Boe - will check it out.

Boe · 17/07/2003 10:28

Oh God am sorry about comment Re; Footscray - I hope I did not offend - and is snobby DP who comes from Bromley who has told me all of the undesirable places.

I actually quite like places like Orpington and Eltham (the places he has warned me about!!) - he on the other hand wants to move to Otford ar Aynesford - can't wait to be marooned in a little village in the middle of nowhere with no lovely parks or great things to do only 20 minutes away!!

Went to M&S yesterday in Bromley after having new haircut and bought myself 3 chocolate bars and a packet of crisps (I don't even like crisps) as well as a sandwich and a cream cake (don't like cream either) but had to later go to slimming world and thought I better stock up on bad things before I start cutting down on everything!!

Apparently lots of the ladies at SW go to Lidl and say it is great - mind you the lady who runs it insisted on calling me babe all the way through - which I found hilarious!!

toot · 17/07/2003 12:08

Just been to lidl to do first shop. GREAT!! People didnt seem odd at all, seen much stranger folk in Local Asda-wallmart at cribbs. Spent £49 on a huge trolly of stuff that included 2 electric tooth brushes, batteries and 3 small tins of quality street (gifts for DS1 to give his teacher and nursery nurses when finishes school). Quite dissapointed that so many English brands and english packaging available. Makes me think its not a true lidl experience. I had to go to Tescos for nappies, wipes and some things I like such as Muller lite yogs and their diet drinks. End result £27 for hardly anything. When 2 y.o goes for his nap Ill type my lidl list into Tesco on line and see what I`ve saved - will report back. Do lidl do nappies and wipes??

lilibet · 17/07/2003 12:40

they are building a lidl very near to me in Wigan, can't wait!!

oliveoil · 17/07/2003 12:46

Whoever first recommended Lidl on this thread - sorry, can't be bothered looking..... - should get onto Lidl for commission, their sales have rocketed!

Bobsmum · 17/07/2003 12:53

toot - my mum bought us Lidl own brand nappies for when we visited with ds over Christmas and they were great (still not as good or as cheap as my washable nappies, but that's a whole 'nother thread! ).
Very funky lime green packaging if I remember.
