Shopping Bills

Long story, but dh and I are having to make cut backs in our monthly expenditure. We realised that I was spending far too much while shopping, because I make several trips to various supermarkets, and get a few extra things that can sometimes add up to £30 a time, on top of the weekly shop. OK, so we decided to stop having take-aways at the weekend, going out for pizza, and for me to make only one visit to the supermarket, unless I need milk or bread (and then I must only buy those items). No problem there, and last week, I managed to spend 'only' £75 in two trips (one for milk only!) However, today I went for the weekly shop, and managed to spend £110. Before you all gasp in horror, I have ds's 2nd birthday party next Monday, and a lot of the shop involved fizzy drinks, wine, squash etc. Also, there were a lot of toiletries involved this week. In addition, wherever possible, I bought BOGOF items and 'two for £xxx' offers.

fio2, Accrington also has Kwiksave of course and lots of bargain booze places - it's a great place to shop! (I don't live there though, she added snootily.)

Manfwood · 09/07/2003 21:40

Just done some internet shopping with Sainsburys and remembered what annoyed me about it - you cant see what you are getting and cant imagine what size e.g.200g of cheese is! so i am sure i will have ordered all the wrong things. dont think i saved any money either - aaargh! will let you know when it is delivered on Friday - oh and didnt get my preferred deliver time either!

princesspeahead · 09/07/2003 21:50

my first ever internet shop I thought I was ordering 3 heads of broccoli and in fact I ordered 3 kilos of broccoli. Do you have any idea how much broccoli that is? Well, I'll tell you. Two COMPLETELY full tesco bags worth.
We made an enormous amount of soup that clogged up the freezer for about 18 months. And everyone who came to the house to see us left with several heads of broccoli. Nightmare.

judetheobscure · 09/07/2003 22:00

boe - if you live near Bromley, then you may be interested in the Netto in Locksbottom. After all the comments made on this thread I am going to give it a try .... soon

hmb · 09/07/2003 22:02

Princesspeahead.

Sympathy over the brocolli. I did the same thing with bananas. And you can only make so much banana bread.

jasper · 09/07/2003 23:53

This is the funniest thread on mumsnet in ages.

Was anyone in Lidl in Irvine today at lunchtime?
The woman chasing three squealing toddlers round the freezer cabinet was me.

Tinker · 09/07/2003 23:57

Our Lidl is quite posh, has a broken boarded-up window only every 2 weeks or so.

Always seems to be full of caterers buying box loads of fruit and veg

jasper · 10/07/2003 00:01

My 15m baby son would not stay in the trolley seat - Lidl is so cheapo they don't have restraining safety straps. So I put him inside the trolley. He then systematically lobbed all the groceries out the trolley. I actually CAUGHT a flying jar of jam, it was like some novelty family circus act.He was so excited at this great game he was shrieking at the top of his voice. It crossed my mind to try breastfeeding him to calm him down. Then I remembered I was and reckoned it would quite possibly be the first time anyone had breastfed in Irvine, far less Lidl (only joking , honest)

None of the ugly shoppers batted an eyelid mind you.

jasper · 10/07/2003 00:02

All the checkout assistants have missing front teeth and are very fat.
I LOVE it.

jasper · 10/07/2003 00:04

Tinker , stop! I am honestly crying with laughter now...

Tinker · 10/07/2003 00:04

And you can feed a family of 5 for £10 per month

jasper · 10/07/2003 00:05

Must keep my eyes peeled for a Netto, sounds like my kind of place.

jasper · 10/07/2003 00:06

And that includes fags and booze Tinker

Tinker · 10/07/2003 00:06

What's yellow and black and full of crap? A Netto carrier bag - boom boom

WideWebWitch · 10/07/2003 11:52

Tinker, and Jasper at the idea of you catching the jar of jam!

Boe · 10/07/2003 11:59

Is Netto open on Sunday - DP at Golf at Westerham and could sneak off for a look around - will have to chuck away al bags and evidence of visit - sure he would go mental!!

Had a Morrisons in Essex - that was an experience - is Netto to this great (???) standard or even better.

(I must admit that I shop alot in M&S, and Sainsbury's is my fave and if was rich would only shop in Waitrose!!)

janh · 10/07/2003 12:05

Boe, Morrisons is to Netto as Harrods Food Hall is to Waitrose

Boe · 10/07/2003 12:14

What Netto is worse than Morrisions - may just go for a nose around to stare at the loonies that must inhabit the place then!!!

What do people buy in places like this - sounds a bit thick but are the sell by dates ok and stuff.

Janh - sorry meant water bottles. My mind was going yesterday (as it does most days!).

Tinker · 10/07/2003 15:10

Morrisons is fantastic! Won't hear a word said against it- far more pleasant than ASDA

Never been to Netto or Aldi but imagine, if like Lidl, they don't sell out of date stuff, just stuff you've never heard of. But, it's just like being on holiday, all teh brands are European , that's all.

Now, who's for Home Bargains?

fio2 · 10/07/2003 15:21

yes we've got home bargains here and savers and wilkos and farmfoods the list could go on... really downmarket we are

Oh and I love morrisons too, why is it scarey???

Boe · 10/07/2003 15:38

Just full of weird people who thought it appropriate to go out half dressed because there wa a little bit of sunshine. They also just looked a bit weird - sound all snobby now!, I am sorry but I do like my sainsburys.

What is this Home Bargains place (wilkos quite good for cleaning stuff and toiletries apparentyl!!)

fio2 · 10/07/2003 15:54

Boe I am a Sainsburys girl myself actually, no weird people in there

home bargains is a shop with loads of special offers, food, toys , towels, nappies, etc. etc. The sell pull ups for less than a pound!

janh · 10/07/2003 16:27

Is Home Bargains the same as Home & Bargain?

I like Bodycare and Consumers Choice too, and even Ethel Austin has its moment!
