the mirena is progesten-only. the nuva ring is combined hormonal contraception, like the combined pill, but bypasses the stomach and liver as it's not oral.

so some who can't use the mirena but were happy on the combined pill (and can't use that anymore) are good candidates for nuvaring.

also, of course, you don't have to be fitted for one, no strings, no risk of uterine perforation or migration, and easier to reverse if it doesn't work for you (don't have to see a healthcare professional to get it out).

It's hard to say how a women will react to the Mirena. Dianette and other forms of the combined pill, though, work with more than one hormone.

I did fantastically on the combined pill and NuvaRing, but the Mirena and the POP/Cerazette were just beyond bad. I just don't get on with progesten-only based contraception. Some do, apparently around 20-25% don't.

See someone at your FPC would probably be best for you.

can you use it when breastfeeding as hormones are localised?

BertieBotts · 09/05/2010 20:50

It has the same effect on breastfeeding as the combined pill, ie it can reduce or stop milk supply. It wouldn't harm the baby though (I don't think - it is only the same hormones as pregnancy produces, yes?) so it's whether the risk of it is worth it.

I had been using Nova Ring since January 2007 before we tried to conceive last year. It was great for me - no side effects, which I'd had with pill and implant and only once my husband reckoned he could feel it during sex.
You don't feel it at all during the three weeks it's inserted and for me they are a great contraceptive solution.
