have you got a solicitor? if no, then your local CAB will be able to point you in the right direction....

Double barrel it and then just 'drop' saying his part...

He can change it at 16 by deed poll.

I think what you mean by schools allowing the 'preferred' name really only applies to first names.

Tobias = Toby
Isobelle - Izzy
Olivia = Livy

but i think when it comes to official things it has to be the legal name.

We find it hard on reports now to see the full name of our dc instead of their shortened or nick name.

Well it's certainly the practice at my child's school because I know of a few people whose children attend the school and they are not now using the surnames that they originally entered the school with. They haven't changed their names legally but within the school they can use the name they prefer to be known by. This must be perfectly legal and sanctioned by the LEA otherwise the school simply wouldn't do it - we all know how consumed by the potential for litigation schools are.

As parents we have a form issued to us to fill out every school year to keep their records up to date for each child - address, contact details for parents etc and on this form it has legal name and preferred name. The preferred name definitely relates to surnames. Not sure if it relates to forenames too because I only know people who have wanted to change the surname.

Perhaps other people aren't aware of this simply because it's something they've never needed to know about.
