My best friend just had her first baby today and I want to get her a really nice present. I have bought loads of baby items so I am looking for something specifically for her.

Any suggestions?

An emergency mummy hamper?

Some wet wipes or a scarf(for the puke on her top)
A face pack
Some chocolates
Some salt (for her to put in the bath to soothe her bits)
Some haemaroid (sp?) cream for the bags under her eyes
Some control pants (to suck the baby tummy in so she can feel glam.

A promise to babysit!

I'm finding it hard to remember what I wanted when DS was born and it wasn't even that long ago!

A time machine - not to travel time and space - but just to crawl into from time to time and catch up on some sleep

Sorry, not very helpful I know! I'll have a think.

A voucher for a spa treatment or gig in a few months time, give her something to look forward to during the very long nights ahead.

It would have been really nice to have some clothes to fit my new shape - but she might not know what that shape is for a while yet. Perhaps something that isn't sized - so a scarf (or shawl etc if that's her thing) like BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny says is a good one.

Is she going to breastfeed? Some breastfeeding tops maybe (although I guess they are maybe a bit of a rip off. I found wearing a vest under everything so I could pull one top up and another down IYSWIM worked just fine.)

Um ...

My midwife recommended lavender essential oil to put in the bath (apparently it speeds up the healing process).

It probably sounds shit, but a good friend of mine bought me an amazon voucher and told me to buy a dvd boxset to watch while I was feeding pfb and it was so lovely of him. I still have a smile on my face now when i watch an episode of prison break thinking of the lovely cuddly feeds we had.

(Mind you, Mr Wentworth Miller also puts a smile on my face when I watch this!)

Thank you for your helpful responses, I have made a list from them, how does this sound?

A big hamper filled with face packs, bath salts, essential oils, good body moisturiser, hot oil treatments for the hair, body scrubs, her favourite perfume, new makeup, vouchers to get her hair done, a facial and full body massage. A few new bras (she is breastfeeding and her boobs have gotten very big) and promise to babysit.

She is the first of our friends to have a baby so we are all really excited!

Would second a DVD set or an Audio Book for her to watch/listen to while she feeds.

Also, a nice facial or massage will definitely be appreciated.

I think it is very lovely what you're doing for her. I was/am also the first and only one to have a baby in my circle of friends and while they were nice, I think they can't really deal with my moving on/change. Your friend is lucky!

You are a good friend emmyzone, hamper sounds fab. Put some food in it though. Chocolates or cake or something. If she's breastfeeding she'll be eating like a horse.

merrymonsters · 17/03/2010 10:02

Cake.

What a lovely friend! Im the first of my group to get pregnant, hope my mates are half as thoughtful as you!

The hamper sounds fantastic. I've just used a spa voucher bought by my friends this morning - it was blissful

I also had a fantastic cheese and pate hamper - I love both and really missed them when pg. It was from here

Finally, I really love the Clarins leg lotion. DH will give me a lovely foot/leg massage in the evening whilst I'm b'fing. Its brilliant for tired achy legs

Spa/pampering stuff is all great but I think the best gift suggestion I ever heard was a big ole lasagne.

The reason being that as a new mum you're pretty much in a state of shock and actually getting to the supermarket for food can be a hit and miss affair so having something in the fridge/freezer that's fairly healthy and tasty is a huge relief.

Or fruitcake - apparently that's a good one too. But no one really likes it.
