How do you find a good relationship counsellor

adelicatequestion · 06/10/2009 15:31

Me and Dh have some unresolved issues relating to an affair he had several years ago.

I have been having individual therapy for something else and this has reared its head as a sticking point.

How do you find someone good?

What questions would you ask?

Any qualifications or strategies you would lokk for?

TIA

here for NLP professionals

You'll have to scroll through to see if there's a couples therapist.

Good luck

I googled relationship counsellors in my area and found a website listing details of several local counsellors. I phoned them up to get an idea of what they were like and the type of counselling they offered. I'm not keen on a psychodynamic approach so was looking for something along the lines of humanistic/rogerian counselling. Might have just been lucky but was very happy with the ones we chose. We opted for two counsellors (they were a couple I think)to see us jointly, then my h went for a couple of 1-1 sessions once I felt I'd gained what I needed from it.

your nearest relate centre or UKCP or BPS websites (the find a theapist bit on both of these sites should allow you to search be couples specialisation)

oh and ring three od four up to get a sense of them and go and meet two or three.... main thing is that you feel you can work with them

Thanks for all the input.

I will shortlist a few and call them first. Then visit a couple to see what their approach is.
