Vasectomies....

nikki1978 · 18/05/2009 21:16

My DH is having this done on Wednesday afternoon. The nurse told him that between the operation and the first sample he needs to give in 3 months he needs to empty what sperm he has left and that it is about 150 ejaculates! Is this right? If it is I am going to be sore

P.S I was in the room when she said this so he is not pushing his luck

btw DH says he is 100% sure and it's his body etc etc so I am leaving him to it although he is yet to actually book in for it!

FabulousBakerGirl · 19/05/2009 07:51

It is his body but by doing it he is denying you the chance of another child so I do think you both have to be 100%. JMO.

FigmentOfYourImagination · 19/05/2009 20:04

I don't think it is possible to be 100% sure.

Obviously if you are having a vasectomy on medical grounds (ie your partners life was at risk if you were to accidentally, or otherwise, fall pregnant) then I think you can be sure. I'm not convinced that anyone who is having it on purely contraceptive grounds can say that they are 100% sure. They may be 100% sure now but none of us have a crystal ball. No one can tell exactly how they will feel in the years to come.

I don't think anyone can ever be 100% sure about anything. Not just vasectomies.

FigmentOfYourImagination · 19/05/2009 20:04

It is my naturally pessimistic nature shining through !

Weegiemum · 19/05/2009 20:29

We were told "frequent intercourse" but as I had just had dd2 it wasn't that frequent!!

He was clear in 3 months (in fact he had a competition with a friend who was done on the same day we won!! which involved him going out with said friend and friend having to buy the drinks!)

Weegiemum · 19/05/2009 20:50

We were told "frequent intercourse" but as I was heavily pg with dd2 it wasn't that frequent!!

He was clear in 3 months (in fact he had a competition with a friend who was done on the same day we won!! which involved him going out with said friend and friend having to buy the drinks!)

Don't do it if you are not 100% sure, though. We were - I was very ill in pregnancy and was facing some serious long term problems if I got pg again - which is why he was snipped during pregnancy - even in the worst case scenario, neither of us could have gone through another pregnancy (I was in hospital with kidney problems 15 times in 9 months, including spending the last month in hospital and being transferred by air to a big hospital as our local couldn't cope!)

Weegiemum · 19/05/2009 20:51

dunno what happened there - I only pressed send once!

SomeGuy · 21/05/2009 16:05

why would you go for vasectomy over something like a contraceptive coil?

norksinmywaistband · 21/05/2009 16:12

Because a coil needs attention every couple of years as well as checks, can play havoc with periods.
The vasectomy, is a one off permanent method of contraception for those whose families are complete

nikki1978 · 21/05/2009 17:47

Personally I wouldn't use the coil or pill as I refuse to pump unnecessary hormones into my body. I have bad health anxiety and the risks of certain cancers etc that you get with these contraceptives would worry me silly.

I was concerned about vasectomies too and the risks there but my DH wanted to have it done and since it is his body I can't start projecting my own anxiety onto him. He is respectful of how I feel about the above forms of contraception and since we really needed a long term contraceptive (condoms had gone wrong for us a couple of times) he stepped up. I am very proud of him personally for doing his bit for our family. Now the baby bit is past we can concentrate on buying a house, building careers and bringing up our two kids. Don't see much wrong with that myself

DH had the op yesterday and is doing well. He is being treated homeopathically by a friend and has taken no pain relief just a selection of little white pills including arnica and calenula and he is doing really well.

Coil doesn't contain hormones. Probably not good if you have heavy periods though.

There's no evidence that IUDs cause an increased incidence of cancer btw.

FabulousBakerGirl · 21/05/2009 18:32

The snip isn't really a long term contraception choice. It is a forever and permanent one.

Oh, I see he's been snipped. Let's hope it works out okay for you both.

bruces · 21/05/2009 18:44

I think it about 100ish is right my DH had it done and I never thought a man could get tired of having a Thomas the Tank but bless him he did,and I got bored of having to help !

nikki1978 · 21/05/2009 18:46

Yes I am aware it is forever but it is classed as long term contraception inthe leaflets I have read which is why I used the term. The coil just wasn't for me. I know too many people who have had problems with it. Either way I didn't ask whether people agreed with the operation so not sure why I am defending myself

In follow up to my actual question it seems the nurse in the counselling session was a bit misled (or DH bribed her when I wasn't looking ) as the doctor on the day told him 60 times to get rid of the sperm which is more reasonable!

DH was done a few months ago while I was pregnant. He was definitely not told 150 times. Have to admit I've left him to sort it and then he can come (no pun) near me again. He just gets tested every now and then and will count as clear when hes had two clear results in a row.

FabulousBakerGirl · 21/05/2009 18:53

nikki I certainly wasn't expecting, or asking, you to justify your decision. Was merely tryin gto help in case you hadn't thought of everything.

Weegiemum · 21/05/2009 19:14

SomeGuy - some coils (the more effective ones) DO contain hormones.

I got pg with one in - therefore dh had the snip. We are delighted with the result.

nikki1978 · 22/05/2009 17:49

Yes I did think the Mirena coil had hormones which is the one I was offered. That is what put me off them plus the few friends who had constant bleeding because of them...

cocolepew · 22/05/2009 17:53

My DH wasn't told to 'empty' the tubes . He had the all clear in a couple of months.

madlentileater · 22/05/2009 18:11

I think it took about 6 mths for DP which seemed a long time to me, and I realised how little I understood about the whole sperm producing business (see earlier comment 'shelf life')
what I would say though is it tookme a long time (YEARS) to really trust it and got anxious whenever period was late. BUT it is fantastic not having to faff around with contraception
