My mother is a water colourist. She does lovely botanical paintings and the odd passable landscape. But she cannot do people. I mean really cannot. Over the years I have been given various odd looking pictures. But for me 44th bday my mum has passed the rubicon. Three beautifully framed and mounted watercolours of my lovely children. But they are horrible. Distorted ugly portraits that look nothing like any children I know, let alone my perfect children. I am so upset. She expects me to hang the abominations in my house. I don't know what to do. I don't want the vile things in my house. I am finding it hard to beleive that she can beleive they are portaits. She can't be that deluded.

What do I do? She even went so far to give me picture hooks so that I can hang them. What do I do? Hang them antd just not look at at them? And take them in the spirit in
which (I hope) they were intended. Or tuck them away behind a cupboard and hope she doesn't notice.

Yes we need to see them.

What size are they? My brother provided one of his paintings when DS was about 2. It was awful, really quite scary, and to top it all - 7 ft long and about 4ft wide. I really don't know what he thought we were going to do with it and I ended up telling him it scared DS and he'd have to take it away.

I'm afraid we have to see them now...

alphabetsoup · 08/02/2009 15:12

in what way are they awful ? Just a bit wonky, or off beam in a way that could enable you to pass them off in a sort of post Freud/Bacon type of way ?

if the former, then put up and smile (for a while, then it's kids' bedrooms or back of a cupboard)

If the latter, then maybe they'll be OK !

OrmIrian · 08/02/2009 16:44

Very wonky alphabet.

I will get Dh to take some photos of them with his phone. Have lost he USB for our camera. But be warned. They are terrifying.

Are they in really nice frames - My mum paints (not portraits thankfully) and always moans about the cost of mounts and frames!

It seems a pity to hide lovely frames even if they are awful paintings!

I would put them up for a year then hide them A comprimise

MitchyInge · 08/02/2009 17:51

are you one of my many siblings OrmIrian?

my mum has had some success exhibiting botanical watercolours but her forays into other subjects are frightening

alphabetsoup · 08/02/2009 18:05

Your children are very good looking so i can see why wonkiness in a portrait would be upsetting !

A friend of mine had portraits of her three dcs COMMISSIONED and she loves the finished product...but they are AWFUL. Hanging up in her dining room. Makes the poor kids, who are lovely, look as if they've been the victims of some missing genetic link.

Does anyone watch king of queens? This reminds me of that episode when Deacon and Kelly got a portrait of Doug and Carrie and gave it to them on their anniversary, Carrie had a giant hand and Doug had unusually large teeth. They gave them the awful portrait in revenge cos Doug and Carrie bought them an awful jazz band statue for their anniversary. Hilarious.
They tried to stage a robbery at their house to make it look like the portrait had been stolen, couldn't you just "misplace" them

MitchyInge · 08/02/2009 18:44

the worst present I ever gave anyone was flying lessons to a couple where one of them was phobic and the other was too fat

catinthehat1 · 08/02/2009 18:51

Hang them where the brightest sunshine hits the wall.

Feb 2010: Oh dear Mum they do seem to have faded somewhat don't they. I didn't know a watercolour could completely disappear like that....

mollyroger · 08/02/2009 19:00

oh your children really are beautiful, aren't they?

Poor you, what a dilemma!

OrmIrian · 08/02/2009 21:31

Thankyou molly. I think so but often wonder if they were swapped at the hospital

DH has now stepped into the argument and wants to stick them away in a cupboard.....
