Feel really guilty, just upset neighbour

I have just really upset my neighbour and I feel really guilty I was just trying to have a laugh and cheer her up as I heard her and her husband arguining early hours of this morning.

She's such a shy, timid thing and she was pottering around in the garden this morning. So I crept out, hid behind a bush and then jumped out at her screaming. She nearly fell over and dropped a vase she was carrying (which smashed) and she burst into tears and ran back into the house

I want to go around and apologise but I darnt. I can hear her muttering to herself in the kitchen now.

"She's so sweet and seems to have such a hard life with so many problems. "
Well, yes, she does.....

Look, for the avoidance of doubt, and as a constructive suggestion, here is a list of situations in which not to leap out at people unexpectedly:

Hospital visiting
Funerals
If you see someone taking their driving test - or even an ordinary lesson
A dentist at work
Tree surgeon with chainsaw
At small children in their cots.

bear in mind - this list is not exhaustive

I have just laughed so much I thought my waters were going to break.

Seriously.

To cheer people up you ask them if they are ok, invite them round for a coffee FIRST before accosting them from behind bushes. I'd maybe leave that kind of behaviour until you know her a bit better. The poor cow...

I'm still laughing, I have cried so much I have mascara smudges down my face.

Thank you for making my day!

Weegle · 19/11/2008 15:26

Sorry I know you've got a bit of a situation here but I have just laughed so hard I dropped the laptop - and that is saying something considering I've been flat on my back in bed for 3 days and not seeing the funny side of anything!

Still laughing - why oh why would you do that?!

BrokenliSpears · 19/11/2008 15:33

Extraordinary.

Mum2OliverJames · 19/11/2008 15:38

This thread has got me clutching at my sides,
Thank you

jesusofutopia2 · 19/11/2008 16:01

Well I saw her walking up my garden path so I quickly put on a "bleeding scream mask" to answer the door with in an attempt to break the ice. When I answered the door, she fainted. Think I may have upset her again. Should I write her a letter apologising?

happystory · 19/11/2008 16:07

cluelessnchaos · 19/11/2008 20:08

this is the best thread i have read in ages, poor love.

jesusofutopia · 19/11/2008 20:39

I did not post the thing about the mask

It IS a serious thread, why would I joke about it?

Anyway she did come around and apologised for "over-reacting" but said she'd been crying anyway and the fright just exagurated how she was already feeling I had a coffee (and some chocolates!)

She said she wasn't bothered about the vase as she has loads more so I'm going to help her sort some flowers out tomorow.

ahh so all's well

Dominion · 20/11/2008 08:23

Do you and your husband do "this sort of thing" to her all the time?

Does he leap out on her screaming? Does he play tricks on her all the time?

No wonder they are arguing....

What an utterly stupid thing to do.

You need to see her face to face.

Far too easy to get away with just writing a note to ease your own conscience.

Dominion · 20/11/2008 08:24

Ah well, all is good in the world then.

wigparty · 20/11/2008 09:23

Jesus lolololol!

You sound like a totally nuts top neighbour!

The world would be a far more boring place if it weren't for people like you and your DH. I do agree you should maybe both draw up a checklist of times and places when the screaming from the bush might not be appropriate

I so hope you are for real!

conkertree · 20/11/2008 12:24

its you and her husband that do these things though is it not - rather than you and your husband.

Anyway - very glad she came round for a chat. Did you manage to broach the subject of why she'd been crying - or is she not a close enough friend yet? maybe this will be the start of a beautiful friendship
