prompted by another thread... who got £xxx for A level results?

I remember being so upset when my 'father' told me he had given his daughter £100 for each A level result she got.

Was this the norm? It would have been about 18/20 years ago

Seeing another thread about kids getting rewards for good reports brought this all back to me

Needless to say my 'father' has never given me a penny, for A levels, or for anything else for that matter - but that isnt the point of this thread!

lots of the girls I went to school with received cash for GCSE and A level results.
I think the going rate in 1990 at our school was
a=£50
b=£40
c=£30
d=£20
e=£10

I didn't!!!!

kerryk · 08/07/2008 22:10

my parents gave me and my db

£100 for every grade 1/a

£80 for grade 2/b

£60 for grade 3/c

anything below that and we got bugger all, at the time my db and i thought it was a great idea but looking back now i cant believe how much they bribed us with.

charliegal · 08/07/2008 22:11

no inducements here either. I got 4 A's at A level because I am a girly swot and emphatically NOT to please my parents.
Hope to take same hands off approach with ds. Think bribing children over reports and grades is counter productive and damaging in the long term.

Rachmumoftwo · 08/07/2008 22:15

When I did my GCSEs (a few years ago), a girl in my class got £100 for each C or above. She spent it all on drugs.

bluefox · 08/07/2008 22:28

Gave dd1 money for A*,A and B grades. Nothing for C or below.

waffletrees · 08/07/2008 22:33

I have just realised that my parents are tight-wads. I got sod all. Do you think I could invoice them now?

lizziemun · 08/07/2008 22:36

I got told by my Dad after i did my CSE's that i could now go and get a job as he would not pay anymore for my education.

BTW he paid for my brother and sister go to college. Neither had better results then me.

ChasingSquirrels · 08/07/2008 22:38

GCse's - 88, A's - 90.
No rewards for either.

MmeBovary · 08/07/2008 22:41

When I got my A' Level results my dad gave me 20 quid I as I recall and then commented on how my friend's results were better than mine...we then fastly adjourned to the local pub and never gave him a second thought. Oh I'm so not looking forward to my darling dd growing up!

Quattrocento · 08/07/2008 22:42

Nothing. Zilch. Nada.

usuallyelectra · 08/07/2008 22:43

no I didn't get anything...

CountessDracula · 08/07/2008 22:44

I was offered a Porsche 928S for straight As

However as I couldn't have afforded to insure it and wasn't a middle aged man with a small penis in the middle of a crisis I decided not to bother

chopchopbusybusy · 08/07/2008 22:55

I wasn't given anything - my Mum said she didn't believe in bribery... hmmm, I would prefer to think of it as an incentive. Don't see anything wrong with it because many of us are given incentives to work hard at work in the form of bonuses. I haven't done so yet with DDs although some of their friends parents have. I'd consider it for GCSE and A level results.

WendyWeber · 08/07/2008 22:57

I did get a v small amount of money - £5 each maybe - for my 2 Ds at A level

My kids are encouraged to think that their own success is their own reward...

Gobbledigook · 08/07/2008 23:02

I agree charliegal - I was just brought up to believe in myself, to always do my best and to understand that the only way to get anywhere in life is to work your butt off - nobody was going to hand it to me on a plate. Consequently I got 1 A and 4 Bs at A level with no promise of car/money involved.

TillyScoutsmum · 08/07/2008 23:05

I got naff all for GCSE's, A levels (5 x A grades) or degree. My half brothers, on the other hand, both got bought cars for A-Levels (not great results)

Anglepoise · 08/07/2008 23:52

We got money for As on report cards (think my brothers might have had a lower scale as less academic than me but might be wrong), GCSEs and A-levels. Think A-levels was £100 an A and then a sliding scale, GCSEs was less.

Felt really sorry for my best friend, whose mum thought you shouldn't work for monetary reward (despite being married to a management consultant and spending most of her time chasing various money-making schemes!). Since most of us sadly spend our lives working for money, it doesn't seem that illogical to me.

No idea what DH and I will do - probably not be able to afford it!

halia · 09/07/2008 01:17

got nowt, and it bugs me when people talk about bribes. Do you think your salary/ bonus at work is a bribe?

Success isn't its own reward or do you pull of that huge presentation for your boss and not get paid your monthly wack?

I think its a bit illogical to expect teenagers to go through the hassle and stress of exams for nowt when as adults we get cash in our pockets every month, salary rises and bonuses for good work.

oopsiedoopsie · 09/07/2008 07:45

I got nothing for GCSE's A levels or degree, neither did anyone I know.

southeastastra · 09/07/2008 08:12

shall i ask my 78 year old dad for £100 as i passed my nvq

Anne76 · 09/07/2008 08:40

Nothing for A-levels, but got £10 per A for GCSEs... which went into a "driving lessons" fund rather than receiving cash.

I don't see it as bribery, but as an added incentive - very much akin to getting paid a bonus for exceeding targets in the workplace.

I remember the day I got 6 'a's in my GCSEs and a distinction in a music grade exam, I was so happy. So were my parents - they gave me half a small sweet sherry to celebrate I managed to royally cock up A levels apart from one so never got to see the Full Sherry Glass in action...

HermanMunster · 09/07/2008 12:23

yeah.i got a 2 week holiday in ayia napa with my class paid for and a car for getting into college.

rolledhedgehog · 09/07/2008 17:15

I got bugger all for 3 A grade A-levels and bugger all for my first class degree.

I was the first in my family to do A-levels or go to university. I think they felt supporting me was enough and I did get the exams for myself.

I think their attitude was the correct one. You have to be self-motivated I think.
