Why did I suddenly block a man I genuinely like after two months of mutual attraction? Did he do something wrong, or am I overwhelmed?

I'm looking for some honest outside opinions, particularly from people who've experienced complicated breakups or found themselves pushing away someone they genuinely liked.

I'm recently out of a relationship. I've told my ex that I no longer love him romantically and don't want to get back together. I've even written him a letter explaining my feelings because he wasn't accepting what I was saying.

I still care about him as a person, though, and seeing him upset is incredibly difficult. He continues trying to win me back, and I feel guilty about hurting him.

Then I met someone I'll call P.

We met unexpectedly in a pub around two months ago. I approached him initially, and there was an immediate attraction.

He's attractive, funny, calm, thoughtful and genuinely kind. I've actually told him he's the nicest person I've ever met.

Over the following weeks, we developed what I thought was a lovely connection.

Some examples:

  • I regularly initiated conversations and asked whether he was coming out. Once, he got ready and drove an hour from home just to see me and my friends.
  • I initiated our first kiss after admitting I was nervous about saying goodbye.
  • I've held his hand in public, sat on his lap, stroked his neck and been very physically affectionate towards him.
  • After warning him that my breakup situation was messy and that I was a "red flag", I still continued seeking him out.
  • One evening, I stayed at his hotel for a cuddle. He promised nothing sexual would happen, respected that completely, and we spent nearly an hour spooning and talking about our lives.
  • While abroad, I went looking for his aftershave because I missed his smell.
  • He later gave me a little travel bottle of it, saying I could smell it whenever I missed him. I told him I smelled it every day, which was true.
  • After returning from my trip, I was working near his office and found a playful excuse to message him. We met for twenty minutes, and I gave him an enormous hug. I later admitted I'd been telling myself not to look back as I walked away. He smiled and said he was glad I hadn't, because he was watching me leave.
  • I've told him I think about him all the time, that everything reminds me of him and that I don't want to lose what we have.
  • I've also said that being with him was what I wanted to be doing and that he was who I wanted to be doing it with.
  • Despite all this, I've repeatedly warned him that the timing is terrible because of my ex.

Then things became complicated.

One Friday, my ex appeared while I was out with P. My ex was very upset, and there was an emotional confrontation that P witnessed.

P remained calm, listened to me and didn't make the situation about himself. I was openly affectionate towards P that evening and chose to spend time with him despite everything happening.

He checked on me on Sunday, I replied on Monday, and then we barely spoke for the rest of the week.

When we saw each other the following Friday, P explained that he'd deliberately given me space because he'd seen how distressed I was. He didn't want me to think he'd lost interest or been frightened away by the situation.

Later, he calmly told me he cared about me, missed me and had feelings for me.

He said he wasn't in love with me because we'd only known each other a couple of months. He wasn't asking me to sort out my breakup and become his girlfriend.

He said he thought we might have something special and would like to explore it one day when the timing was right.

I never explicitly told him I had romantic feelings, although I recognise my words and actions may have strongly suggested it.

After that conversation, I continued being affectionate. I sat on his lap, danced closely against him, held his hand and rested my head on his shoulder.

Later, we sat together talking about my ex and how difficult I find hurting people. P encouraged me to think about my own happiness.

At goodbye, he went for a more passionate kiss than I was giving back. It was a little more intense than I wanted.

I was also quite drunk and got a taxi home alone. I'd told him I'd message when I was safe, but I fell asleep.

He became worried, sent several messages, called three times and contacted a friend of mine to check whether I was home safely.

I've since learned that two women close to him had previously been assaulted by taxi drivers, which may explain why he was particularly frightened, although I didn't know that at the time.

When I woke up, I told him I was home. We exchanged friendly messages and jokes. He thanked me for the evening and complimented me.

Then, later that Saturday, I blocked him on WhatsApp and unfollowed/removed him on Instagram. Without any explanation.

It's now been over a week.

He hasn't contacted me through Facebook, iMessage or any other means, despite having ways to do so.

I assume he's respecting the block.

Here's what's confusing me.

I genuinely like this man. I find him attractive, enjoy his company, admire his character and have repeatedly sought out his affection.

He hasn't demanded a relationship, given me an ultimatum about my ex or been aggressive towards me.

Yet I've abruptly cut him off.

I'm wondering whether his feelings conversation, the slightly overenthusiastic kiss and his worry about me getting home made everything feel too intense.

Or whether I'm emotionally overwhelmed by my breakup and frightened of hurting another person who genuinely cares about me.

I'd really appreciate honest opinions:

  • From the outside, does it sound as though I had genuine romantic feelings for P, even without explicitly saying so?
  • Was he reasonable to develop feelings and believe the connection was mutual?
  • Did his goodbye kiss and concern about me getting home cross a significant line, or do they sound more like imperfect but well-intentioned behaviour?
  • Could my unresolved guilt about my ex explain why I suddenly pushed P away?
  • Was blocking him without an explanation unfair, given our history?
  • What would be the most responsible thing to do now if I still like him but am not ready for a relationship?

I'm not looking for people to automatically defend me or criticise him. I genuinely want to understand this from both perspectives, including where I might have handled things badly.

Honey....therapy.

I suppose what I'm asking is how to navigate the aftermath of pushing away someone I genuinely liked while still dealing with the emotional fallout of my previous relationship.
I know I handled things badly by blocking P without an explanation, and I'm not looking for anyone to justify that.
I genuinely care about him, meant the things I said to him, and enjoyed the connection we were building. But now I've cut him off, I'm finding myself thinking about him and everything that happened.
I'm struggling with whether I need to give myself time to process my breakup or whether I've pushed away someone I actually wanted in my life.
I guess I'm looking for advice from anyone who's experienced something similar, and how they moved forward. Especially with my ex just not getting the message.

If you want your ex to get the message stop contacting him about it, you've broken up it's not a soap opera.

But ghost people isn't a good trait and I've never done it before. I also do not think P deserved it.

Unblocking him and apologising for the blocking and then “breaking up” with him in a respectful and grown up manner would be the very obvious solution.

Why don’t you do that?

(I know why. Because you’re the man in this scenario. But just to play your game …)

Divebar2021 · 20/10/2026 07:38

You’re / she is on the rebound and shouldn’t be dating anyone. People are not toys to be picked up and put down at whim.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 20/10/2026 07:42

You sound like an absolute head wrecker. Stay single, get therapy.

moderate · 20/10/2026 08:12

I would recommend to your boyfriend that he forget about you and stop posting reverses on Mumsnet.

IrradiatedHaggis · 20/10/2026 08:27

Why woman do thing? Ask other women as all have same brain.
Trick women into thinking woman speaking, yes yes.

Maisymouse2 · 20/10/2026 09:05

Head fuck
Run P run...or he woyld soon enough.

Thatsthebottomline · 20/10/2026 09:27

I"'ve actually told him he's the nicest person I've ever met".

Nice ? I think you've found your answer.

CortieTat · 20/10/2026 10:41

I think Claude, especially Sonnet and up are slightly better at making stuff up than GPT.

Laura95167 · 20/10/2026 19:04

Assuming this is genuine you sound unstable. This is written out very oddly - all these specific types of physical touching at specific times...

Here's what I think in no particular order:

Im unclear why its "intense" with the ex. Hes the ex. Unless theirs children involved youve not mentioned - let it go. It isnt kind to dump someone and string them along with "its not that I dont love you.. i dont want to hurt you" BS. It sounds nice but its all about you.

Only you know if you want to date or not. Its cool either way. Whats uncool is you want the BF experience from P without the BF commitment. Thats shitty

You blocked him. Probably immature in the circs because he sounds keen kind and patient. But you have so let it go. Dont try and play with him.

Dont Qn why P hasnt tried another way to reach you. You blocked him and hes respected it. If you did it hoping hed chase you thats shitty.

Tbh it sounds like you used P for comfort a distraction and maybe even to wind up ex.

I think youve played with P enough. So let it go, dont over think it and move on

exaltedwombat · 20/10/2026 19:26

This will all sort itself out once you’re 15.

You are just a tease, you chased the man then blocked him without any explanation, l hope that he has the sense never to contact you again, you don't deserve him.

JayJayj · 20/10/2026 20:43

You sound like a “pick me”

You blocked him but don’t know why!! But why oh why hasn’t he contacted me on the ways I haven’t blocked him? Errm because you aren’t worth the drama.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 20/10/2026 20:46

Just admit that this is a reverse and you're pissed off because she blocked you.

Surgz · 20/10/2026 21:04

Egocentric, dramatic and immature behaviour . I think counselling may help

winnieanddaisy · 20/10/2026 21:08

P might be glad to see the back of you .

sweetpotatopie2 · 20/10/2026 21:20

Okay, I'm scratching my head here. You blocked him and now you're asking us why, as if it was someone else who did it?

Anyway, practically speaking, if you want him, unblock him. Then, to avoid him thinking you bring too much drama, you might just tell him you must have done it accidentally or something. Or, if you don't want him, just leave it and move on.

Sorry, that's all I've got. Best wishes.

Laurmolonlabe · 21/10/2026 08:45

You are the only person that can answer this question, I would guess you are not as over your ex as you claim- and it is that that is muddying the water. I think it may be academic though because cutting someone off without explanation like that means there is no going back. I think you probably need to see a therapist.

dh280125 · 21/10/2026 09:30

Surely this is a reverse.

moderate · 21/10/2026 11:32

dh280125 · 21/10/2026 09:30

Surely this is a reverse.

The most obvious and pointless reverse I’ve ever witnessed.

secretrocker · 21/10/2026 11:39

The woman in this scenario reminds me of a friend of mine.
She makes everything hard work, like if she doesn't have drama in her life she has to create it.

BertieBotts · 21/10/2026 11:50

If you're the woman: Message P and tell him you're sorry for ghosting him and on balance, you think you're not in a good place mentally for a relationship, wish him all the best for the future, and then delete his number and the chat history so you're not tempted to get back into contact. If you can't handle a reply, then also block (you could say that you've done this in your message not because he's done anything wrong, but because you don't trust yourself).

If you can't bring yourself to do that then don't. Just delete and block. You don't owe him an explanation, it would perhaps be a nice thing to do but not at the expense of your own mental health.

Go to therapy and really work on your relationship issues and people pleasing before you get together with anybody else.

If you're P, she's done you a favour honestly. She's not in a good place mentally for a relationship, and you can't be her therapist and her boyfriend. She sounds like she's aware of that on some level, but might not be able to bring herself to actually say so. Or she doesn't trust herself to say goodbye because she's worried she'll cave at the slightest thing or dwell on any hurt feelings in the reply for weeks. Or she's got back with her ex. Either way, forget it. It's not a good time. If you feel deeply wounded or like there's something wrong with you because of this interaction, NHS offer talk therapy in most areas on self referral. It probably doesn't need any deep self reflection but a few sessions with a professional would probably help you put it into some context what will help you move on.

Buzzlightfear · 21/10/2026 11:50

I mean this is so clearly a reverse I don't know why I'm engaging.

Noone on here knows why she blocked you, probably you just got too intense. You sound very intense tbh.
