Bored w holidays & hubby!

SugarSpice2020 · 15/08/2026 23:44

Any other parents just bored to tears w the school holidays (if you’re not working, like me) & sledding way too much time w kids & spouse?? We went to see my family but now back in a city & lots of friends away. Child doing a couple of classes but camps so expensive.
hubby is also sick past week so been at home too. Already we weren’t getting in but having him here, & me no alone time (unless I go out) is driving me nuts. I cannot explain how frickin’ bored I am w his company (no conversation) & otherwise just the chatter of a 5 year old! I’ve started fantasising about mtg various hot celebrities just as my own social / romantic life is sooo dull right now!

im not looking for advice - clearly I need a job when school starts plus new hobby meantime to meet others (& maybe a new partner!) - just wondered if others feel the same. Depressed & bored! But cannot immediately alleviate it easily.

Oh wow - lots of time with the DH and children? Sorry, I can't relate to you at all as this sounds like heaven to me.

Tbh, I think you have bigger issues than not enough hobbies... your poor DH...

Onthemaintrunkline · 16/08/2026 04:52

You need to give your head a wobble. This is real life, it can’t be sunshine and rainbows and some days are difficult. All this is within your realm to fix. Use your imagination. But if you are wanting a job or interest, (which will help you a lot), the comment re finding a new partner at either, I find disloyal to your husband and rather immature.

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/08/2026 04:55

Are you 12?

Dovesono · 16/08/2026 04:58

I'm impressed/surprised you're managing to go sledding in this weather.

78Summer · 16/08/2026 04:58

You would find even a ‘hot celebrity’ would have very little conversation in real life.

JustMeSimply · 16/08/2026 05:02

Nope love my life,9 3-16 kids, dh can't get enough of it..convo, banter, joking all day..only time I raise my eyes if the kids are all ill at the same time during the night as I like my sleep lol fortunately only ever happened a couple of times

MissJoGrant · 16/08/2026 05:09

You dh is driving you mad because he's ill? What's he actually done?

ninetofiveeveryday · 16/08/2026 05:58

I’m surprised people are so critical here op. I can relate to this from years past.
I now work, children go to camps etc or I have days off which we enjoy, quality definitely more important to me than quantity.
Husband and I get on far better when we both go to work, have things to talk about in the evening. We have our own friends and hobbies so the time we do spend together is great. We’ve talked seriously that when retirement comes this is the relationship we want, shared hobbies as well as plenty of separate hobbies so we don’t live in each others pockets.

i think you are right, try and get a job you enjoy for next year and then limit the days off with your child and spouse to make them days that count, that you can generally enjoy. Mumsnet likes to flame people who admit they don’t want to spend every single second with their children but you are definitely not alone. My psychiatrist mother always told me that good quality childcare was far better childcare than a parent feeling unhappy!

Without trying to hurt your feelings, what you describe paints the picture of an immature, spoilt person.
It is also a disgusting attitude to potentially want to meet someone new, but staying put with the "boring" old hubby for your convenience. If you are completely done with your relationship with him, have the decency to tell him so you can both move on, and work on your new lives. Maybe marry someone you actually like - people can drift apart over time, but don't tell me basic things like how he hold conversation was so different when you decided to get together with him.

mumsntt · 16/08/2026 06:40

your poor DH

hope he breaks up with you, he deserves better than you

utahsainthood · 17/08/2026 05:02

A new partner? So you’d upend your DC life for a new bloke?

Kitjo · 17/08/2026 05:12

And what exciting contribution are you making? Simple fact, “you get out of life what you put in”

Rainbowcat77 · 17/08/2026 11:31

Wow, the usual Mumsnet breathtaking lack of empathy on this thread I see!!
I think in the summer holiday when you all suddenly spend a lot of time together it often starts to feel claustrophobic and hard work. This is actually completely normal Op and I’m not sure why PP are trying to make you feel worse than you already do about it.
It does sound as though you are a bit bored and frustrated with your life in general though Op so why not use this time to make a plan…what jobs would you like to apply for? What hobbies capture your interest and would fit with your daily routine? Do you and your dh need some sort of counselling to see if you can get back on track or would it help to just take some time out and do something fun/go on some dates together. Create a long term plan and then work out what small steps forward you could take right now EG going to some hobby taster sessions or browsing jobs available to see what’s out there in your area. You’ll feel better once you have a bit of a plan and feel less stuck. Also, five is actually a nice age to take out and about usually so look out for some cheap days out or free fun day type things and plan some lovely days with your dc to break up the boredom. Good luck!!

I work at a lovely co working centre in town - even though me and H work in same business and have plenty of room at home for me to work - I think of it as going to my members club every day, £200 a month totally worth it for free tea and coffee of multiple types, Monday breakfast kick off, Wednesday afternoon cake buffet and Friday afternoon drinks trolley!! People used to moan they didn’t see enough of partner, I saw too much!!

mindutopia · 17/08/2026 17:11

Firstly, if he’s well enough to be up annoying you, he’s well enough to go back to work, but that’s beside the point.

Dh and I spend literally every day together. Both work from home, except one day a week when he’s on site, and currently I don’t work at all though starting back in September. I do like a quiet house when they’re all gone, but he doesn’t get on my nerves because we have a good relationship. I mean, being annoyed at someone being home sick for a week does not bode well for actual illness (I’ve been off sick for 2 years and Dh has had to do some caring in that time) or retirement.

Hayleylulljah · 17/08/2026 17:33

Not at all. I work with DH and we are together most of the time. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

user28288 · 17/08/2026 21:30

It can be shit but count your blessings everyday, gratitude and thankfulness can help. I’m a single mum to 2 autistic boys and everyday I mourn having a dh, a proper family unit. You are so rich x
