Husband’s resentment over money after my operation is leaving me hurt

I feel so let down by my husband.
It’s been a hard year - i had a big operation at the start of the year which prevented me from working 4 months. We have always gone 50/50 on all finances. And I pay for my car and anything associated with me and my kids.
I have two children from a previous marriage. I have found this year very difficult for a number of reasons, I felt stripped of my independence, and not being able to work has been difficult mentally and financially. There have been lots of comments from him about my lack of earning - “my money” “I’ll do what I want it’s my money”, “it’s none of your business it’s my money” just lots of really unkind unnecessary comments relating to money. It’s made me feel horribly guilty.
I now have a new job in a family members business and that itself has come with its own challenges and my husband has made comments like “we haven’t all been handed a business on a plate”, “you spend more time with your family than me”.
We do nothing but argue and I’m so lonely, he likes to drink and smoke, he spends a lot of time sitting in the garden in this weather drinking and smoking in the evenings and I sleep in our bed on my own - he is in the spare room - it’s been every night this week, we used to hang out but I can’t really drink these days after my op, . Throughout this entire period I have paid all my bills, paid everything to do with my children, and as soon as I started earning I made sure I paid into our house account. Tonight we had another argument and he said “I’m not like other wives” and the honest truth is I don’t think I am, I am just so deeply hurt that he is so resentful and says all these horrible things. Other women I know are looked after by their husbands, not just financially but I don’t think they are subjected to this. Everything is my fault, he takes no responsibility and I feel so let down. The resentment really worries me, I hate it. Where do I go from here? I am so exhausted, he’s very reactive so dealing with him is so hard.

Where do I go from here? As far away from him as possible

Octavia64 · 12/08/2026 21:04

He’s a shit husband. Move on

babyproblems · 12/08/2026 21:08

Wow op he really is a shit.
Honestly what in earth is he bringing to you here in terms of support??? He is being nasty and selfish and frankly you deserve much much much more. xx

babyproblems · 12/08/2026 21:09

I cannot emphasise enough how much of a shit husband he is. I’m so sorry he’s treating you this way! Sending you a huge hug. Hey rid of him @Pinkyminky, there’s better out there xxx

SchnitzelAgain · 12/08/2026 21:12

He’s nasty and unkind, and probably an alcoholic. Surely you know that you and your children deserve so much better?

Bringemout · 12/08/2026 21:13

He’s angry because you malfunctioned and became a potential “burden”. I’m so sorry he’s awful and you aren’t obliged to stay.

bitontheobtuse · 12/08/2026 21:14

You don't have to stay married to someone who treats you so badly and makes you feel so rotten.Flowers

NotRachem · 12/08/2026 21:14

Can you afford to leave sooner rather than later?!

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 12/08/2026 21:14

Where you go from here? You leave the utter cunt

DaisyChain505 · 12/08/2026 21:15

Why are still with him is what you need to ask yourself. This relationship sounds nothing but hard work and depressing.

Quitedark · 12/08/2026 21:21

How old are your kids?

Pistachiocake · 12/08/2026 21:26

It's hard when your partner's ill, and when one person has an operation, although they're the one dealing with the physical pain, it does affect the whole family. So while they should be supportive, I have some sympathy if they're worried about bills/doing all the housework etc, but what you've described sounds really mean. I'd be telling him you expect an apology and change of attitude, or thinking about whether the relationship isn't right anymore.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 12/08/2026 21:27

Get a divorce ... you will be happier!

Victorius19 · 12/08/2026 21:28

You don't make comments like that to someone you are supposed to love. Honestly, it sounds like he despises you. Don't enable him to.

Lostdaughter66 · 12/08/2026 21:53

I broke my ankle and couldn’t work or do anything at all for about eight weeks. My husband did everything and worked full time. He never complained because he loves me. You need to leave - you sound so sad - life shouldn’t be like this xx hugs

FunPartyIdeas · 12/08/2026 21:59

@Pinkyminky Whilst I vehemently disagree that a "good" husband should look after his wife financially (why?), your husband is being out of order. If you physically couldn't work due to illess, he should have stepped up as best he could. What else could you have done?!!

Anyahyacinth · 12/08/2026 22:06

Start plotting...look at finances, property prices and decide this isn't good enough for your one precious life. Just change your mindset bit by bit. You don't need to declare anything. Be careful to stay safe

Elieza · 12/08/2026 22:09

ducks in a row time x

NeatPinkFinch · 12/08/2026 22:09

Divorce him OP. He’s a twat. You don’t need a twat around your kids now do you.

wp65 · 12/08/2026 22:24

He sounds vile. Please free yourself - you and your kids don’t have to live with this nasty man.

whippersnapper55 · 12/08/2026 23:06

Oh OP you sound so unhappy 🙁 you don't deserve the awful way he treats you and you and your children shouldn't have to live with it. Please get some legal advice and start making a plan to leave him. You deserve happiness and you will not find it with him.
