Is he incompatible with dating a parent, or just scared?

I’ve been seeing a man for around six weeks, seeing eachother maybe 3 times a week and until this point things have been going really well. I met a couple of his friends and he met one of mine. We are very open and vulnerable with eachother, challenge one another and genuinely enjoy eachother. We recently spent a beautiful weekend together where I finally let my guard down quite a lot.
On Monday, he told me he was finding himself wanting more of my time and headspace. He said he really liked me and wanted more connection, but that he was struggling with the fact that I have a young child (2 years old - 60% with me/40% with dad custody)
His concern was that my child is naturally such a priority in my life and always a consideration in my decisions, and he worried that he would never be able to occupy the kind of space in my mind and life that he would want from a partner.
He said he wanted a very close, “entangled” relationship with a partner and was worried that because I already have such an important person in my life, I wouldn't be able to give him the level of emotional priority he would want, as if my ability to love is limited.
He has a fear of rejection amd a fear of vulnerability. He is currently in therapy.

At the time, I tried to reassure him that my child being important doesn't mean there isn't room for a partner to be deeply important in a completely different way. I told him that I understood his concern and wanted to understand exactly what “more” meant to him.
He then became increasingly worried that his feelings wouldn't go away. He said he didn't want to waste my time or allow me to become more invested if he ultimately couldn't be happy in the situation.
After some space, he told me that his gut was still telling him he wanted more and that it was “too much/impossible to ask from me,” and that he didn't think the feeling would change.
He also said that he knows he likes me enough and is very attached to me that if he saw me, his emotional side would want to make it work, which was why he was worried about seeing me.
I asked whether this was something we could actually talk through or whether he was definitively done. He continued to say that he was worried about getting deeper into something, becoming more attached and then finding that he still felt this way, potentially hurting both of us. He didnt actually answer my question.
I eventually sent him a long message explaining that I had to say my bit because he made a lot of assumptions and I wanted to correct the narrative. I told him that I care about him a lot, that this hurts, and that he had already been steadily becoming a priority in my headspace and life.
I told him that I had the capacity to hold space for both him and my child, and that I didn't see them as competing for the same position. I explained that if he had suggested becoming official and properly giving this a go, I would have said yes. I wanted more of his time, attention and closeness too.
I also told him that I wanted to build the kind of close, “one unit/entangled” relationship he had described, that my child is one part of my life and identity, and that there was plenty of space for him to have his own important place. I wouldn't expect him to feel about my child the way I do, or to compete with him.
I wasn't trying to pressure him to change his mind; I just couldnt sit there with him not knowing the truth as he didnt really know how I felt about him as I held back a lot. He also didnt have a clue about my capacity, and just assumed for me.

His response was:
“This is a lot for me to take in and process. Thank you for telling me.”

I'm now struggling to understand whether I've actually answered the concern he originally raised, or whether this is something deeper that my reassurance can't solve.
I'm also questioning whether this is simply a genuine incompatibility with dating someone who has a child, or whether he's become frightened by the increasing closeness and is trying to resolve an uncertain future before we've actually experienced the relationship.

Also, if he does respond once hes processed - is his catatrophising, overthinking and creating hypothetical issues likely to be an issue moving forward?

This man is truly the kindest, sweetest man I have met in my life so far and he has made the last 6 weeks of my life so beautiful.

Any outside perspective would be appreciated.

Blimey OP. You don't need all this analysing and therapy speak to see the bleeding obvious. He doesn't want a toddler in his life, particularly one that's got nothing to do with him. It's not everyone's dream ticket, especially men. He's trying to tell you this but you're not listening. He doesn't want to be the evil bastard that ends it, he wants you to do it for him so he avoids the guilt trip.

Exactly.

HoppityBun · 12/08/2026 20:05

He’s literally told you he’s not suitable. He’s right

Jellybunny98 · 12/08/2026 20:13

Maybe I’m the odd one out here but I honestly think he’s being totally fair enough and he’s right.

It’s no secret that having children puts a strain on even the most secure of marriages, I love my husband but I definitely don’t have anywhere near as much time, energy, affection to give him as I did when it was just us two with no children. It doesn’t change the fact that I do truly love him, so much, but we both chose to have our children, they are ours, and we accept that this is the season for being a family and focusing on our babies with “us time” fit in as & when it can be which honestly isn’t that often and that does tend to be the case with young children. That’s okay when you’re a family and the children are both of your children because it’s a decision you made together, it’s two little people you both love equally and you’re both pouring into the same cup.

That just isn’t the case when it’s not shared children though. I can absolutely acknowledge that if I woke up tomorrow single I couldn’t give even remotely close to enough time or effort to someone new. They would be having to just fit into my child free time which wouldn’t be much and some people will be totally okay with that, some won’t be- like this man- and that’s completely fair enough and understandable. I would probably have felt the same as him if I was single before having any children, I wouldn’t have wanted to be with a man who already had children.

username2185 · 12/08/2026 20:16

He’s basically trying to let you down gently, all of this and it’s only been 6 weeks? Wild. Block him.

Likeiloveyou · 12/08/2026 20:22

Dump

Hatty65 · 12/08/2026 20:24

It's utterly irrelevant.

You've been dating this bloke just over a month and he's made it clear he doesn't want you with a child. Whether he's 'scared' or just doesn't want you to have any other commitments doesn't make any difference.

Block and move on. You are not the woman for him.

And yes, your child should come first.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 12/08/2026 20:34

What a fruit loop!

I'm a bit worried for you OP that you don't see it.

LasVegass · 12/08/2026 20:37

He’s trying to get out of it.

Monr0e · 12/08/2026 20:37

6 weeks!!!
That's a whole lotta word salad from both of you which is basically him saying he's just not that into you, and you bending over backwards trying to convince him how wonderful you could actually be for him

At this point it should be fun, light, and easy. You should feel butterflies when you get his messages not be agonising over the tone, words, nuance, trying to figure out what does he actually mean.

The older I get, the more I value simplicity. Life is not a Mills and boon novel filled with tortured souls who wish they could be with their one true love but just can't because of past trauma, attachment issues, or any other bullshit excuse they come up with. If someone wants to be with you, they will.

ChrissyMT · 12/08/2026 16:32

Its baffling!! I gave so much of myself to him (within reason - it had only been 6 weeks!). He never asked for more, I was going at his pace. We spoke openly. He is very fearful and overthinking. Very analytical. Very loving and caring, genuine. Its such a shame and I cant quite get my head around it?!

What did you experience?

You gave too much.
6 weeks in?! Baffling!

How can you be emotionally connected to someone after 6 weeks of dating?!

Bin the man child off who is jealous of your child and slow the hell down with the next one!

blueeyes1376 · 12/08/2026 20:40

He is telling you loud and clear no matter what you give it won’t be enough he will drain you blame you and ditch you

ProudOpalRobin · 12/08/2026 20:42

Irrespective of his “issues”. I think it’s a bit soon to be dating especially with a 2 year old maybe wait a few years and see how it goes.

amber763 · 12/08/2026 20:44

Six weeks. Get him in the bin.

Rachelshair · 12/08/2026 20:56

He wasn't worrying about your child when you were in bed (assuming that's what the weekend was all about) though was he, what a prat. Stop begging and block him. You really don't know him well after only 6 weeks.

Givemeachaitealatte · 12/08/2026 21:13

Oh no OP, this level of introspection is off putting enough without the jealousy of a literal child. He's giving me the ick and I've never met him. He will always be jealous of your child, this can't go any further. He's telling you who he is and that isn't the partner for you.

DropOfffArtiste · 12/08/2026 21:15

If you have your child 60% and you have seen him 3 nights a week, yiu have basically seen him all your childfree time since you met. What about your life? Hobbies, friends, family, work?

Dunnow1 · 12/08/2026 21:15

I don’t think an entangled relationship is a positive! It sounds like a relationship where you have no contact with friends and family and your focus is him. You said you reassured him you wanted an entangled relationship, what does this look like to you? It doesn’t sound healthy.

Mom2K · 12/08/2026 21:27

He sounds unhinged. Get rid.

Bonkers1966 · 12/08/2026 21:30

You are on a highway to nowhere with this one OP. Please run before the bullshit intensifies. Jeez

Coco852 · 12/08/2026 21:31

Sounds like he’s unsure about the relationship and creating an elaborate excuse to end it. But let’s say he genuinely feels that way: then he isn’t mature enough to have a relationship with a parent.

NoHotGirlsInHell · 12/08/2026 21:34

I stopped reading because honestly? It’s an excuse. He doesn’t want to be with you OP.

blythet · 12/08/2026 21:34

Sounds identical to someone I dated. He’s not from Edinburgh is he?

MrDobbs · 12/08/2026 21:49

Personally, I think in 6 weeks you can't really judge anyone's true level of kindness and sweetness.

There a few possibilities here:

  • he wants to end things for whatever unknown reason, and this is just a variant of "it's not you it's me" etc. A bit weasally but at least it's 6 weeks not 6 months.
  • he genuinely doesn't understand that for any normal person, no one can ever come above their child when it comes to emotional involvement and commitment, or expects to be treated with the same emotional priority. Nutter and highly likely to mess with your head if it continues..
  • he genuinely isn't able to handle, or doesn't want, a relationship with someone who has a toddler. Fair enough, no shame in that at this stage, though could have said it straighter

Unfortunately I can't think of a fourth possibility where it all works out but maybe there is one.

midsummabreak · 12/08/2026 21:50

Life with a two year old is a privilege and such a funny, tender, crazy busy time in life but can be incredibly stressful -you don’t need another child, Be very glad he’s showing his true character now before you are in too deep and impacting your beautiful child. Already he’s done your head in. Let him go and make space for a far happier future without him. Far better to be single and happy than be angst ridden with someone like that

Dontwanttheseboobies · 12/08/2026 21:52

Run, run, run!! He’d have lost me at “entangled”!! 🚩🚩🚩
