Nervous smiling is making my partner think I am hiding things

Think this is the correct section as it’s starting to affect the relationship.

Ive got a nervous smile and it’s making my partner doubt me! Thinking back at school I used to get in trouble a lot for smiling/laughing at inappropriate times or for things I literally had nothing to do with but got punished because I kept smiling so it must be me!

The last few months it’s come from no where and of course the more you think about not doing it, the more you do it! My partner is starting to suspect I'm up to no good when I'm really not.

A few examples:
She came back from holiday and said what had I been up too, I explained (just normal things) but started smirking, so she was like what have you really been up to, and kept saying yea alright I believe you.

Last few months Ive been exercising really hard to try and lower blood pressure as per GP advice, she asked me why are you suddenly obsessed with the gym, I said I just want to get healthy, she said is it because you’re doing it for someone else, you meeting up with someone at the gym? I’m really not but kept smiling/smiking when explaining and she now thinks im up to no good!

Works night out, once home, I smirk, she thinks im up to something, go to big tesco to get my daily steps in, that’s random why are you doing that tonight? You meeting someone? Im almost laughing saying no!

So it’s a self fulfilling circle now, she’s questioning me more and more even over innocuous/usual things, im trying to just say XYZ but keep thinking don’t smirke otherwise she will think you’re lying, I then do smirk and the cycle just gets deeper and deeper.

Please help, has anyone else experienced this? Any techniques to stop? As it looks like im lying about everything and anything and I think its going to start a serious relationship fault soon.

Thanks all for your advice.

not sure you can do anything. She can learn to trust you based on evidence

Doggymummar · 11/08/2026 20:41

It's a her problem not a you problem

SilenceLaySteadily · 11/08/2026 21:49

Try winking instead.

When you're regularly accused of a crime you're not committing, you're in a toxic relationship.

She is making you nervous. It’s not you. It is a toxic relationship.

See a hyponotherapist. Sounds like a neevous tic almost.

When you're regularly accused of a crime you're not committing, you're in a toxic relationship.

To be fair, my teenage son is a nervous smiler, it’s the reaction that makes him look suspicious not his verbal response. He will also smirk when he’s being told off which is really infuriating as I know he can’t help it but it looks so disrespectful.

OP I think you’re ina viscous cycle because you’re probably getting more anxious about each question.

Like everyone else said, the problem is with her not you. A partner shouldn't make you nervous like this, or make constant accusations of cheating every time you go anywhere. This sounds Hellish to me!

OMGDidYouSayThat · 12/08/2026 01:03

I wouldn’t worry about it, keep smiling and she’ll either learn to live with it or she’ll fuck off, either way you’ll still be you 👍

BusterGonad · 12/08/2026 04:36

A nervous smile us caused by nerves, her constant accusations are causing you to be nervous. She sounds very controlling.

iamnotalemon · 12/08/2026 05:24

Get rid of her. She sounds awful

NoisyMonster678 · 12/08/2026 05:46

It seems like you are not 100% comfortable due to the extra pressure your partner is putting you through so the smirk has become something you do because you are on edge, almost like a coping mechanism because of the grilling you keep getting. It is like she is miss-judging you and acusing you of cheating when you are innocent.

Does not sound like you can be yourself and she is putting the relationship at risk by putting you on the spot.

If you can't be yourself, is it worth it?

likeitshard · 12/08/2026 06:22

Ask your partner to stop questioning your honesty all the time. And think about if the relationship makes you nervous are you actually happy?

ScorpionLioness79 · 12/08/2026 15:08

It sounds like you live together. Did this happen in the honeymoon period when you didn't really know each other well enough? If not, she's familiar with your regular behavior, so maybe she's trying to sabotage the relationship and invent a plausible reason to end things.
